The general name for fossil and/or remains dating is called "Radiometric" and it counts the rate of clicks of radioactively absorbed Carbon 14. While alive, organisms absorb C12 and a trace of the radioactive (but harmess) C14...which is a radioactive isotope of Carbon. This absorption stops when we die.
Newer methods, such as the "Isochron" technique...is speeding the process up...but only incrementally;
