After every mass shooting I republish my article The ABC's Of Gun Culture In America. This is around the 6th edition since 2014.
We don't punish tens of millions of sober drivers for drunk driving assholes, so why should we punish the tens of millions of responsible, law-abiding gun owners because a few nut jobs misuse firearms?
Requiring personal responsibility is not punishment.
@GuyKeith Since when has it not been required?
@Piratefish If you read my article, I covered this in Quid Pro Quo
Americans are surprised when they find out how many guns there are in the country just to the north of them, a lot of guns, not a lot by American standards but compared to most western countries it's a lot. Then when you tell them how few mass shootings we have they really just can't figure it out, I mean how could we have so many guns but so few mass shootings?
Educate people on the responsible use of firearms, do not teach people to believe that guns make them safer when the statistics clearly show that they do not make you safer and then start screening out the mentally deficient and mentally ill people who try to buy guns and are refused access, it doesn't catch all of them but it stops a lot of the potentially homicidal types from killing a bunch of people. Also that whole military hardware thing has got to stop, you would never use it to shoot a varmint or a deer for meat so wtf do you need one for? ditto for handguns, they're only good for hunting two legged critters.
Which is precisely why I choose to own a handgun. Sometimes one needs to defend himself against "two-legged critters". I own a handgun for much the same reason I own a fire extinguisher, a smoke detector, and a first aid kit. I doubt I'll ever need any of them, but fuck me running if it turns out I do and thought it would be smart not to have them.
@Piratefish What works in Canada often does not work in the US of A. I also have several fire detectors but if one of them goes off accidentally or if in a rage somebody in my house decides to pull one on me or perhaps I feel suicidal and decide to off myself with an extinguisher, it's minimal damage. Your odds of dying in your home increase dramatically when you own a hand gun because as Bruce Lee famously stated in Enter the Dragon - 'any fool can pull a trigger'.
@Surfpirate Statistically speaking, one in eight drivers is legally intoxicated after midnight on a Saturday night. Burt guess what the chances are of that being me? Zero! So I am not impressed by stats, all they do is prove there are fools among us. I have owned a firearm most of my life and it has never accidentally gone off, nor have I ever pulled it on anyone in a moment of heated passion. That's what idiots do. So if you think you may be one of them idiots, you're probably better off that you recognize that fact and choose not to own a firearm. On the other hand, I am a responsible, law-abiding adult who can handle owning a firearm for protection. And I know how to use it, too. There's a reason why over 95% of LEO's think private gun ownership is a great idea. The only ones who have to worry about my firearm is the asshole who decides to try to bring violence to me or those I love and care about. Come to think of it, none of my other gun owning friends have ever accidentally shot anyone either, or used their gun for crimes. Maybe because they're also not total idiots?
and we'll continue to keep reading it, again and again ad nauseam. ty
