Seven Labour M.P.s have announced their defection from the party this morning. They haven’t formed a new party and are at present calling themselves Independents. How will this affect the present impasse at Westminster and any future narrow votes in the Brexit debate? Does it spell real trouble for Corbyn in any parliamentary elections, should a General Election become necessary?

I think if a General Election is called fairly soon they will just lose their seats and disappear, but I fear that we won't have an election until it is forced on the conservatives and more right-wingers will leave in dribs and drabs, to do maximum damage to Jeremy Corbyn.. I don't understand why they hate him so much since they say they don't disagree with his policies. They are putting their own pique before the the millions of people who are really suffering under this brutal government though.

Their ideologies are not the same....simple as that. The Tories are much the same...splits are appearing in all the parties. My only concern is that they have chosen the worst possible time to leave, and yes they will probably lose their seats at the next election, I’m sure they realise that there’s a good chance of that, but they were probably going to be deselected by the party anyway. The real problem is that JC is not popular with a large swathe of middle of the road voters, and he is unlikely to win the next election unless he can widen his appeal from his left wing base.

@Marionville What is it that they dislike? I find it hard to understand. I also find it hard to understand why they think their dislike for one person matter enough to affect their vote.

@CeliaVL You would have ask them that, but I think there is a long list.

I was wondering the same. Do you know where Lib Dems stand with all this? I have been out of the country for 12 years and not too up with the day to day stuff outside of Brexit

Geoffrey51 Level 8 Feb 19, 2019

Nobody knows what’s happening...the Lib.Debs want a second Referendum I think.

I like Corbyn and am over the moon that his leadership finally allowed for a platform on policies that were going back to Labour's traditional socialist roots. It has finally given us an actual choice in British politics, that had been severely missing with 'Blue Labour'. I think this split comes from 7 members who are clearly Conservative at heart. I think the calls of antisemitism are ludicrous. Labour Party membership continues to grow. The Neo-Liberal policies of the last 40 years have been a disaster for the majority of the population, and the last 8 years of Tory rule have caused a humanitarian crisis. I cannot wait to see the back of them.

Can he win a General Election though?.. that is the question. He is undeniably popular with large numbers of labour voters, but that’s not enough on its own. He should be wiping the floor with the Tories at the moment but he’s not. Both parties are in a complete shambles and JC isn’t bringing his party together any more than TM is doing with hers. Conviction politician he no doubt is, but his convictions are not winning him friends in the country as a whole....and politics is about winning elections, otherwise you will be in permanent opposition.

@Marionville That's what people said during the last election and then they couldn't believe how close the race was. Labour have been canvassing, the new members are going door to door and actually talking to people. The media in this country is so biased to the right it is incredible, a complete propaganda campaign for by the uber-rich. I think this split is just part of that. If you think that the majority of the Labour Party aren't behind Corbyn you're swallowing that bile.

@Marionville I have to agree. Conviction is great in opposition but not so hot when in government!

@Charlotte I didn’t say the “party”. I said the “country”. It’s not enough to have the party behind him, he needs the voters behind him too in order to win a General Election...that I don’t think he has in great enough numbers.

A return to evidence based politics would be refreshing rather than blind ideology as displayed in the tyranny of ideology, and the two party system.

Yes..true, but that seems like baying at the moon!

All JC has to do is support a peoples vote. No Brexit or no peace. It destroyed my family and my life. I've cut off every member of my family that voted for it after my french partner and young son left. I've nothing left to lose and a lot of anger to satisfy.

Savage Level 7 Feb 18, 2019

He is a complete disaster for the Labour Party and the country.

Labour down by eight MPs! I wonder if Chuka's 7 will increase their number and overthrown the evil Servalan... Theresa May.
To be serious, though. I consider it likely that their potential of leaving had been discovered my Momentum who were then going to drop them in it with Corbyn. That way, he'd just bump them off one at a time replacing them with party liners. This way they get to give a voice to the middle or road politics that makes the British system work.
Given some extra support from other more like minded politicians, they could form a new consensus party on similar lines that makes the SNP work.
Corbyn has so far been an utter failure at being the head of the opposition and therefore is almost an equal to the Catastrophic Theresa May in the Brexit fiasco.
PS, in case people didn't know, a Labour MP died over the weekend.

Sofabeast Level 7 Feb 18, 2019

I had forgotten that....there will be a by-Election for that constituency,

@Marionville As well as a selection process to go through by the Chukka 7 in the inevitable forthcoming general election.

@Grumpy Yes...of course.

Independents are the most disruptive of all. Because of the way the voting goes in Australia Independsnts and minor parties frequently hold the balance in the senate. With no whip, no clear ideology and some with a sense of devilment the whole political process can be come a den of horse.-trading!. I hope this doesn’t happen in Britain.

Geoffrey51 Level 8 Feb 18, 2019

It’s already a complete shambles....there is no cohesion in any of the parties over Brexit... just another new twist to the ever-changing, never-ending, soap opera that is Westminster...more drama there than on any TV programme!

2

It is obvious to me that there has been a campaign of disinformation about Corbyn and these 7 have just swallowed the lies hook line and sinker- along with many of their constituents. It would be a great pity if their actions prevent Jeremy from having a chance of real change in politics.
History is against them but I am not a history fan because it never repeats faithfully.

Mcflewster Level 8 Feb 18, 2019

I’m not too sure...Corbyn is not popular in the country as a whole, you have to be able to bring people over to your point of view to win elections and that would be almost impossible for him...even his own party supporters are not all with him.

Denial won't fix any problems. Do you think for example that if Corbyn should have been more publicly supportive of the Cooper amendment?

Follow the money

Simon1 Level 7 Feb 18, 2019

And,..where will that lead?

@Marionville who ever they back in the next vote

@Simon1 I really don’t think money has much to do with it in this case.

@Marionville you sure about that ?

@Simon1 Where on earth are you getting your fake news from?

@Marionville It's the same news I've seen, they have not registered as a political party, so they don't have to show where their funding comes from.

@Marionville [mirror.co.uk]
But it's early days, they might register properly later. Doesn't look great though.

@Charlotte I think there is a bit of mischief making to make them show them in a bad light...they have been out of step with the Labour leadership for some time....I can see a reason why some would want to discredit them. Everything seems to be in a state of uncertainty at the moment and nothing would surprise me about anything any more...so who knows? Btw...I believe nothing I read in the Daily Mail, Express, Mirror or Sun....they are all rags.
