Can anyone tell me where the original lyrics for Scotland The Brave come from. Internet wisdom says Cliff Hanley about 1950 but I was sure it was older and we all know how one rogue fact can become internet lore!

Having said that the lyrics are a bit puerile when compared to the masters like Rabbie and that fellow called Trad.

The tune 'Scotland the Brave' came to England around 1837 with Prince Albert as it is originally a Prussian drink song. It was then converted to bagpipes (doodle-sacks if you are German) for Queen Victoria. Lyrics would no doubt have followed soon after, but I do not know when.

I can't recall off hand where it came from bu there is a movie quote I love where after quoting Burns an American tourist tell a highlander "He was a wise old Scottish Jew that Rabbi Burns!"

EDIT It was from "The Battle of the Sexes" (1960)

It was written by Cliff Hanley in 1951. He was a well known journalist, author and public speaker from Glasgow, who wrote the words and put them to a well known traditional bagpipe tune. He composed them for a show in the Empire Theatre, Glasgow, and they were only intended for that one performance, but they caught the imagination of the public and many artists have sung and recorded them since. In 2006 there was a poll to find the most popular song to become the Official Scottish National Anthem, between Flower of Scotland, Scotland the Brave, Highland Cathedral and Scots Wha’ Hae’. Flower of Scotland won with 41% of the votes and Scotland the Brave came second on 29%.

Thanks Marion. Should have been Scots Wha’ Hae’!

@Geoffrey51 Absolutely!
