Well, I was there in 1969 helping build the Carlton Centre. Then I flew to Caapstad and took the tourist bus up to Durban visiting a Zulu village and seeing women dancing and singing. In Jo-burg I stayed at the top of the hill in a residential hotel. Jacaranda? Worked for Murray and Stewart. Had two highly intelligent "boys" under me. I was offered full time work but I hated the politics and visited Pretoria once and that totally put me off. I had a great young engineer friend Botie Desai who had me to dinner. It was the finest Indian meal I ever had. I hope he rose as high as I did in the engineering world. C.A.C.Topping cheated me out of a lot of money. I think the other young engineer was called Backenburg.

@rogerbenham Glad to hear it! I'm hoping you remember songs sung in the unforgettable Zulu ''click'' language...the dancing...the harmonies....and the beauty of that part of the world?

@LucyLoohoo Oh yes. I have kept in touch with them. In Jo-burg I used to listen to Zulu and Xhosa stations playing raw new style 20's blues with true feeling the whites do not understand. I loved all their hymns.
Beauty. I suppose so. I was born into green fields, beechwoods and bluebells. I now live surrounded by forests, lakes, 8500 foot peaks, lots of wildlife, friendly natives. I love where I live. Jo-burg in winter (arrived July 1st) was verging on being too hot for my liking.

@rogerbenham I'm afraid the ''new'' seasons will be too hot for everyone's liking! I thought the coast from Jo-burg over to Pt. Elizabeth was stunning...imagine penguins on a beach? Groups of baboons staging ''hold-ups'' along the road? Not to mention the beautiful vinyards...and, of course, one MUST sample the products, right? It's only good manners.
