Here is something from way back ... played often on the SABC ... Magda Hain singing Möwe, du fliegst in die Heimat ... I have always loved this song. Sorry, couldn’t find a translation online, but roughly the gist of it is about longing for your homeland, like the seagull which flies Tag fur Tag, Nacht fur Nacht (Day after day, Night after Night) alone (einsames) like a lone ship on the world’s seas, through storms. To me, I can just hear the longing in the melody as well of course as in the words. Hope someone likes it, it dates from the 1940’s.
Lyrics in German
Möwe, du fliegst in die Heimat
Grüß sie recht herzlich von mir
All meine guten Gedanken
Ziehen nach Hause mit dir
Bist du im Dunkel entschwunden
Folgt dir voll Sehnsucht mein Blick
All meine guten Gedanken
Ziehen nach Hause mit dir
Bist du im Dunkel entschwunden
Folgt dir voll Sehnsucht mein Blick
Einmal nach stürmischen Tagen
Kehre ich wieder zurück
Möwe, du fliegst in die Heimat
Grüß mir mein heimliches Glück
Charming...it seems familiar, although it’s in German...maybe there was an English version.
