It seems that back in the day there was not enough time for workers to visit the bathroom. You could be down a hold or keel and it could take a good 20 mins to get to a toilet. As you were also paid on piece work that meant that you went near to job. Not just #1s but #2s as well. So they had a guy whose job it was to clean up the turds. He was also paid "per item" @ 6d or half a shilling, but to increase his wage he would cut the big ones in half. Consequently, he was known as "Half a bob a jobby Bobby".
