True story; Many years ago my mate Bob had a boat in north Wales. After the two of us sailing past the great Orme and battling tides and currents all day we moored up in the town of Bangor, where we went for much needed meal. The cafe owner was a friendly guy and as he served us we all talked about boats. He then asked Bob if he knew what a spare lash was. Bob had studied sailing for ages but he racked his brain trying to recall any reference to a " Spare lash. " Reluctantly Bob finally gave up and admitted his ignorance asking the owner to elaborate. The owner then told him " The spare-lash was the sound that the anchor made when it hit the water! "
