A life no lass should bear
They lost their youth in poverty

The Match Girls and the Sally Ann
Cleaned up the rotten trade

They struck to strike a bargain there
To stop their leader’s sack
And forced the owner to be fair
Before they’d take him back

With some to re-employ
The Sally Army set up then
Red Phos does not destroy

They upped conditions for each lass
In work and health and wage
Removing them from yellow phos
Made Bryant disengage

So when you strike your matches now
Those lasses were the first
To strike a Union light and vow
Let owners do their worst
