Q for fellow vegans: vegan about two years, vegetarian for 5, I use fortified cereals and nutritional yeast for B12... do you find you still need a supplement? Feeling a bit rundown and suspecting that could help? Thank you, all input is appreciated.

Actually yes I am, ty for asking. I ordered supplements and have been taking them for a few weeks. Iโ€™m taking both vitam B12 and a multivitamin just to support what I try to do with food. I am a very busy person so itโ€™s pisdible I was just run down, itโ€™s hard to know for certain but I feel good and good about the choice. I appreciate the input from this post๐Ÿ™‚

I've been vegetarian for over 25 years and take a generic multivitamin, B-12, flax seed oil, and baby aspirin daily.

Haven't had any issues with energy levels, YMMV.

I would suggest if possible getting bloodwork done before adding a supplement to see if you are low on anything. I use a complete vegan supplement powder added to a smoothie a few times a week. I do take an additional B12 supplement seeveral times a week. In terms of B12, the consensus seems to be that everyone whether vegan or non-vegan should be supplementing because deficiency is common in the entire population.

My last bloodwork shows Iโ€™m a teensy bit low on iron. But itโ€™s common for women my age to be low on iron whether they are vegan, vegetarian, or omni. My doctor said may be that is why I feel fatigued. But I never said I felt fatigued because Iโ€™m donโ€™t and my energy level is off the wall. I supplement with iron additionally to my complete supplement.

Other than B12 and iron, vegans may need to supplement zinc and Vitamin D. For Vitamin D, avoid D3 as itโ€™s usually from animal sources.

Adding a note: You will find there are 2 forms of B12 supplements out there, cyanocobalamin and methylcobalamin. Iโ€™ve heard conflicting information on which is best. Cyanocobalamin is more easily absorbed but methylcobalamin is better retained by the body. Iโ€™ve solved the problem by taking both types alternately.

Thanks for the detailed information... I agree I should get blood work, I may start the b12 first however just due to scheduling... wonderful info.

@ArdentAtheist I have been vegan long enough to have gone through all the good and bad about the lifestyle. I've read up just about everything I can on health and nutrition information pertaining to vegans. I went vegetarian then vegan for the animals and the environment so I didn't know much about nutrition and health when I started out. I don't claim to know everything but feel free to ask me if you have questions.

Be mindful though that B12 supplements come in different dosages. Most pharmacies carry only the very low doses like 250-500 mcg. Amazon carries I believe up to 5000 mcg. Generally vegans would take about 2000 mcg per week, but the amount is best determined by a doctor or pharmacist. Too much of any vitamins can be dangerous. I would suggest a lower dosage first until you can talk to a doctor and have your bloodwork done.

I eat 95% veggies, I take some supplements, my doctor recommended I increase animal protein intake during my pregnancy. So, more fish.

Be careful with the fish. You could be exposing the baby to mercury.

@mcgeo52 doctor did warn me of that.

@Cutiebeauty, I would ask the doctor how many nutrition classes he took? Animal protein is not necessary for a healthy pregnancy.

Your body does not use animal protein directly. It has to break it down into amino acids that are then reassembled into useable protein. You can get the amino acids much more readily from plant sources.

Yes I do. It can't hurt to try it.
