The problem with a two party system is that eventually the two parties get together and decide to work for their own benefit. There are ups and downs and power struggles but the one group that always gets fleeced is the public.

I agree. Although, I am certain it is worse than it has been before in my lifetime.

As long as there is free enterprise thats going to happen. We have no say about gas prices or food prices. We had a sugar shortage and they jacked the prices x5. They never went down. The toilet paper shortage. Prices still the same. Those two parties are getting contributions from the companies that over charge us. It cost 25 cents to make a big bag of fritos and i pay 4 dollars for that bag. Fritos sponsors NASCAR. You aint going to win anything.... we're all played for suckers.

@LetzGetReal. Lol.... thanks for answering back...lol

I don't care for your cynicism. If your statement were true, our nation could not have lasted as long as it has. It is up to US -- and not to the politicians -- to make sure that the politicians understand their real job, and that we will hold them accountable for carrying out their job with wisdom and honor. .

Sounds great, let me know how that works out for you, winning at a table where the game is rigged. I don't care for your naivete but I'll deal with it if you show me some results.

@Surfpirate Listen you 59 year old "kid", I am an 81 year old man with graduate work in political science, and political involvement for most of my life. I consider it an insult that you call me naïve simply because I disagree. I would not choose to do low simply because I disagree. you misspelled "naivety." You may not want to become a responsible participant in our political system, but I do as a matte of patriotism.

@wordywalt You are correct, I used the French spelling and you are American so you only have the one spelling. I'm 57 and not 59 but I will let that slide out of respect for your advanced years.
You began your post to me by stating the offense you took with me and you have followed up with an ageist insult, yet surprisingly you are the one who feels offended. Why is that?
I agreed to accept your position if you could just produce some actual results instead of theory but that's PoliSci for you, lots of theory but not much by way of practical results. Build 3 companies from the ground up, make a payroll for 30 plus years and get back to me, you venerable graduate student.

@TheInterlooper Your sarcasm never ends, does it?

You ake offense easily. I simply said that I did not care for your cynicism, which is simply a way of saying I disagree. Do you take offense when anyone disagrees with you?

@wordywalt
I don't think im the right person walt, ...

Saying both sides suck so it doesn’t matter, is what the Repubs want you to believe do they can continue to get away with their outrageous activities. The reality is that even with all their faults, the Dems are still miles better in terms of doing the right thing for the people, the world and the environment. The Repubs base their whole campaign strategy on greed and fear. Tired of winning yet?

They still have a few tricks up their sleeves. But, you know that.

Problem with a 3rd party is that it becomes the whore, sleeping with one party for this, with the other party for that... selling votes and support not in principle but to the highest bidder. Democratic Capitalism for Suckers!

3 parties is better than 2 but not by much - 5 or 6 parties will actually get things done, it will take a little longer but the outcome will be for the majority of the people instead of the minority of elites that currently win all the benefits. Speedy and efficient government that never addresses the needs of the many is hardly good government.

@Surfpirate remember american mentality about what a winner looks like. About majority rule, about greed and backstabbing, common among politicians. May work in a country without the ethnicity divisions in this land. In this place? Honest, I always going to be Puertorrican First, American Second. A Texan will tell you the same, such a jewish, a West Coaster, an East Coaster, a Chicano, a Hawaiian, an Alaskan, A black, A Southener, A Native American, etc, etc, etc. May work in many other countries but not in this Melting Pot. My honest take.

@GipsyOfNewSpain I'm not suggesting that politicians wouldn't be less crooked under a multiparty system, merely that it would be harder for them to cut a deal in their best interests and in the worst interests of the public. A 2 party system is just too easy to corrupt but throw in a couple more players and it become much more difficult for the crooks to organize against the people. Imagine how hard it would be to pull off a government shut down with 4 parties, it's just too good of an opportunity for at least two of the four crooks to stab the other two in the back, you could never pull it off but with only two parties it becomes a fait accompli.

@Surfpirate Every democratic banana republic have more than 2 parties. The 3rd party is that democratic american utopia. I know you mean well but simply is a mirage. Look what burnie sanders zombies did to the democratic party. How he refused to give up and unite the party... remember even a dead zoo gorilla received 16,000 write-in votes. I hold burnie responsible for trump being in power... burnie had a chance to take the high road but instead showed his true colors. Don't say that some burnie zombies did not voted for trump because I know some that did... they will not admit it now after the effect and trump results but that is all they talked about doing. Not saying american politics with a 2 party system is correct and well but... a 3rd option... that is how you steal an election. trump is EXHIBIT A.

@GipsyOfNewSpain Interesting that you say that banana republics have multi-party systems when until recently the 2 party model was typical of banana republics like Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua and El Salvador. Western Allies such as Germany, France, Great Britain, Canada, Australia, Italy, etc. are better examples of multi-party systems as this is more representative of democracy and is less polarized, making the threat of civil war less likely.
It is equally valid to say that Hillary could have stepped aside and thrown her support behind Bernie in order to ride that populist tide to victory but she didn't either but that's a 2 party system for you, corrupt to the bone.

@Surfpirate Very racist of you to think every democracy in Latin America is a banana republic. Then you use as example "our western allies" But you disregard that none of those countries is the melting pot america is. "I always going to be Puertorrican First, American Second. A Texan will tell you the same, such a jewish, a West Coaster, an East Coaster, a Chicano, a Hawaiian, an Alaskan, A black, A Southerner, A Native American, etc, etc, etc. May work in many other countries but not in this Melting Pot." I repeated the quote because only in your little head you can make it work. Explain me how you are going to have a functioning KKK in the same little party with a Black from New Jersey. Just saying. And yet maybe that what you wishes... A Black Party, A Chicano Party, A Baptist Southerner Party, A Native American Party, A Jewish Party... And you will try to combine all the whites into one big party. "Divide and Conquer". Been Done Before!

@GipsyOfNewSpain Hmm, you state that all banana republics are multi-party but when I note correctly that until recently the states that are traditionally identified with being banana republics were actually 2 party systems, you pull the race card? Why is a republic a banana republic? Does it have anything to do with bananas? Do actual multi-party states like Germany, France, Canada, Australia, the UK, Italy, etc have a major banana crop? Not that I am aware of.
What's with this segue into various subgroups based upon race and religion, why would political parties breakdown along those lines? They don't seem to do so in the rest of the world, not unless your world view ends at the borders to the lower 48. I'm unpleasantly surprised that you would express these view as someone who has supposedly traveled quite extensively according to your Bio.

@Surfpirate You can make it about me if you wish. Go ahead... spin.

@GipsyOfNewSpain It's not about you, it's about your illogical train of thought. I can't make heads or tails of it and I am getting to the point where I don't even want to bother trying. You seem like an intelligent person but this just isn't going anywhere from what I can tell.

@Surfpirate I let it go a long time ago.
