The more and more I see and read things on the internet, the more I feel like face palming. I simply can not believe how stupid some people

really are. I mean, Just how did it get to be that %20 of Americans actually belive that we didn't go to the moon,or believe That the earth is flat, or think Evolution is lie spread by the devil.

On one hand I love what the tools of technology have to offer, an unlimited source of information at ones fingertips, and to that I think is a very wonderful thing.
On the other hand a lot of the information out there is so mind blowing stupid. What I see a lot is that some people will give the same value to a paper written by someone with a Doctorate, as they give to just some made up idea that some conspiracy nut writes.

What is the cause of this?, I have no Idea.

I'm no super genious by any measure, but I consider my self educated enough to apply the scientific method, and critical thinking to understanding something I don't know.

It just seems strange to me that there are so many people that will believe some nonsense even where there is a vast amount of emperical evidence showing them other wise.

Honestly, I don't have any answers on how to fix their kind of thinking, or a solution to getting people to use critical thinking.

I have seen some things that did work, and have turned people into actually doing experiments themselves. For example the show Mythbusters.

For 14 years they have used the Scientific method to show what is true, and what isn't. they made it very entertaining, so I think it got

some to learn a different way to understand what is true and what is not.

Cosmos was a good thing as well. In my book both versions of that show, the Carl Sagan one in 1980, and the newer one with Neil DeGrasse Tyson. Both were great in showing everything from the progress Science has come through the centuries, to understanding just how wonderful
the universe really is.

Sorry. This was just a rant about some observations I've seen lately.

Sorry for the typos and such, I wrote this on my phone, and the key pad is too small for my fingers.

if you look at the percentages you're really just scratching the surface of delusions, other mental problems and low intelligence. Not everyone is without mental infirmity or even sane. I've seen estimates as high as 30% of Americans in need of mental counseling. Anywhere between 5-10% being organic problems. Now consider the crossover area with people of low intellect. The bell curve means that there are at least 7% of people with significantly less than average intelligence. You also have a good 20% of the country living in rural areas that could be highly closed off from the events of the real world. This is why I am not surprised that Trump has a steady 35% who love him no matter what. with that 35% all he needs is another few percentage points and by driving a wedge in the middle of the opposition on any topic he becomes unstoppable. It's sad really.

"What I see a lot is that some people will give the same value to a paper written by someone with a Doctorate, as they give to just some made up idea that some conspiracy nut writes."

Micheal Crichton writes in the intro of his book "Airframe" "The information age has given new respectability to the uninformed opinion". Okay, all that's really changed is the revelation that there are a lot of people out there lacking the ability to form a reasonable conclusion...about just about anything. It would be good if more people learned how to think, but I don't see that happening.

I'd like to understand the flat earthers. What's going on that psychologists can unravel.

I agree. For the life of me I just can't how some are so convinced to believe something regardless of the evidence that shows just how they are.

Most of the time I will just blow it off, and move on to something else that makes sense. but some times I will have to admit that I just can't help but calling out their BS, and give some real evidence. yet to my dismay, it always seems to fall on deaf ears. Sad really.

@TristanNuvo

I wonder if there is an element of victimhood at work.

This is common to Christians who often complain of being bullied by non believers. The victim part of their faith keeps their faith strong. Their self righteousness and virtue is informed by their victim status.

So I wonder if the ridicule that flat earthers receive creates a victim status. In essence - they are suffering for the cause.

Hello sausage fingers. Some people are just unteachable and some are like horses with blinkers, neither are worth your breath don't despair it is not anything that you do.

@Donotbelieve So did I. That was pretty funny 🙂

That 20%, I personally think it is higher, have brain damage from all of the fake food & high doses of sugar they consume during pregnancy. Single motherhood results in poor brain development at the most crucial time by requiring mothers to work & not be with the child. Then there is the failed educational system. Add genetic predispositions, "all the cretins are breeding" & there it is. Idiots. Just look who they voted for in 2016 for President. A Putin plant that has performed a quiet coup d'etat.

I honestly do not know why there has been such a decline in understanding from a lot of people, which is sad. But I do love your input, it gave me some perspective that I have thought of.
