Runaway capitalism.
This is happening right now at the grocer I work for. People have been getting their hours cut for months. One full time employee got 12 hours last week.
Then people earning higher wages began getting fired for nonsense reasons, like not having a paid sticker on things like coffees and such, which they had reciepts for.
Last night management drastically cut hours and didn't inform anyone. Multiple people came in at their scheduled times only to find they were now scheduled for 4 or 5 hours later.
I talked to multiple people and eventually found out that this company is in the midst of a buy out and they using atomic measures to fluff profits.
Areas meant to be staffed by 10 people are staffed by 2. There are lines stretching from the registers to the back of the store. The store managers are trying to fill multiple positions at once and simply can't, while dealing with the ire of every employee present.
This is why we need unions for EVERYONE. This is why we need legislative controls on predatory business practices. These people can't function without our labor and consent. We need to flex that muscle. We need nationwide labor walk outs and unionizing.

If unions continue to weaken...which is the trend..partially due to poor worker participation..things will not end well for anyone..

Many years ago the owners of Fred Meyer tried to break the Union. The employees walked out. They brought in lower paid people who had no idea what they were doing and to the profit higher they did not hire enough to actually do all the work. The strike lasted a while, I do not remember how long. One thing that did happen is some people got together and would get the workers over to a part of the store and others would walk out with all kinds of stuff. There were people gathering food in card and then just pushing them out the door without going through the check out counter. There was once when a large screen tv went out the door. I did not shop there but I did see the results. I have no idea how this was more profitable. Good luck to you and do not help these people or do anything that could be seen as not doing your job. It is illegal and you could spend some time in jail. I would not think this would be a good thing to have happen in Florida. Or any other place.

Have to make the profits high so the price they get for the store is high. Does not matter what happens just so it does.

There is a movie that just came out called Sorry To Bother You. It's about a telemarketing company. The movie is over the top but if you really get involved with the underlying current it is what companies are doing to employees over and over again. And the end result was something totally off the wall on one hand but the underlying idea is employers treating employees like animals. Corporate America is so powerful we are just cogs in their machine with no value except to push until we wear out.

Very, very true

@Blindbird it is a type of modern day slavery that for them is palatable.

This is how tRump created more jobs.

He did say there would be so many jobs that everyone would have to have two or three. His words.

Many of the people voting for Republicans are long out of the work force so they have little understanding of the direction that corporate america has taken over the past couple of decades. There is a breaking point and I think we are very close to reaching it.

Agreed. To get unions has prerequisites, like getting money out of politics. ATM congress will not enact union friendly legislation.

Yes… Even in high school, my first employer’s union contract ended. So, instead of scheduling two of us to each work a 4 hour shift, with a 10 minute break included - the employer began scheduling four of us to work 2 hours each ...in order not to pay any break time.. Learned me early the need for unions, and that was only the tip of their treatment - we struck! And we won!

But that was eons ago ...even prior to Reagan … and the constant Republican Propaganda against ‘unions.’

The only way you will stop this is by banding together.
