I grew up in a right wing fundamentalist home, so when I left home I left religion and just didn't care either way. It was when I Had some horrible things happen to me that I did what I had been programmed to do and got back into church. This time I was really serious about studying about god. I did everything I could to be in the god's good graces. I read the Bible and prayed. That's how I found out there was no substance to it. Everything I read was either common knowledge, contradicted something else in the Bible, was a false promise, or was downright evil or stupid.
I came out the other end of that soul searching becoming an atheist.
Did anyone else have a similar experience?

I have been pretty Agnostic for years. In my case meaning "There might be some sort of god but no need for organized religion.". I had breast cancer - and figured out that there just wasn't a god at all. I wasn't bitter or angry - just my priorities realigned yet again. Also being exposed to siblings who are still Roman Catholic - I saw and more silliness to the entire thing. Was it more important to attend a Mass? Or to help out a sibling who wasn't supposed to be lifting to do a little yard work?

Before I lost faith in god I lost my faith in organized religion. I was a young kid growing up in Catholic Poland when my mother told me a true story which happened when she was a young girl. Her father was a kind of a self taught small village veterinarian. During the lent time the village's priest summoned him to help with his dying horse. It was normal back in the day to have a settlement with animals and fields if you were a village priest. You had a free workforce provided by pheasants and extra income on the side. As the story goes my grandfather saved the horse and as a token of appreciation the priest invated him for dinner. To my grandfather's surprise all kinds of fatty food and meats were served and when he mumbled shyly that it was a sinful thing to eat meat in the time of lent the village priest scolded him in a fatherly tone that if you eat meat in the god's sanctuary it shell not be considered a sin. Needless to say my grandfather went back home to retell the story and my wise and rebellious great-grandmother said this famous words : if it's not a sin for a priest in church it's not a sin under my roof. This was a first seed, many more followed since. Here great- grandgrandmother Anastasia, this one is for you !

Fortunately, I never experienced that.. I had a taste of religion, more out of curiosity, and at my own request. But my siblings and self came to the same conclusion, at a very early age… You’d have fit right in..
We had a houseful of catholics at the end of our block, forced to attend ‘catholic school.’ Our ages, they apparently felt we were the only kids they could openly share their doubts with, then we’d discuss it amongst ourselves. It always sounds the same … logical conclusions to obvious myth, yet parents and grandparents are still inflicting this crap on their own... Child abuse.

Reading the bible creates a lot of atheists.

Nothing grand like your experience. I tried to believe in God but no matter what I just couldn't do it. None of it ever made any sense to me. Sitting in church I would just roll my eyes when the most stupidest things were said and think this is such horse shit. I just can't understand how so many people believe in a man who has so much hatred toward what he created. Their Only evidence is a book written by a bunch of men, hundreds of years after it was to have taken place, who didn't know where the sun went at night. (Insert eye roll here)

I did as well. My mom died when I was in high school. We had a pretty horrible relationship before that. Then I had a couple other negative experiences. I went on a journey for God and actually received my bachelor's degree in religious studies. Along the way, I realized I didn't make any sense. I ended up getting divorced recently over difference of opinion regarding beliefs. Kind of a bummer. I can't go backwards though.

It wasn't that bad for me.

I doubt that there could be anything happen to me that would make me want to base my life on a nonsensical fairy tale.

Nope, never been programed.

Fer sure! I tithed, I did all the right things, and life still fell apart. That promise that things will be better in heaven, crap I need it better now!! When I looked at it closely I realized I'd been played.
