Do you have a lot of flat Earthers in USA? I thought all that died centuries ago. I really thought the references here were just amusing anecdotes. I never came across anybody declaring it in UK where I lived for 50 years and certainly not here in Australia. That would really get you kicked out of the barbie.

But the earth has to be flat because of the four corners of the earth in the bible, maps and books with N, S, E, and W etc. and old references to "the pillars of the earth." When you reject science you just do not know WTF hold it up!

There is small, but vocal minority of folks who want to reject all things science (while doing so on an advanced piece of technology created by that same science). I think it more indicative of a cynical overreaction to our present societal woes. A cabal of conservative (and sometimes ill-informed liberals) see many of the problems being related to the rise in secularism and increasing societal complexity. Too much unidentifiable angst with a need to find where to direct it.

Of course we do. How do you explain 25 to 35% of the population support for the moron in chief??

That is a very good point!

An anagram of 'The earth is flat'

is

A heart felt shit

Kind of sums up what it's about 🙂

Nice one!

I have met just a couple of flatearthers. The more publicity it gets, though, the more certain vulnerable people seem drawn to it. It's the psychology of conspiracy theories.

Go on YouTube and look for video clips of old Jay Leno sidewalk interviews called "Jaywalking" and you will see no shortage of completely ignorant people. We lead the world, apparently, in evolution-deniers, (thanks, religion!), and I think it stems from that. I don't think it is simple stupidity. I think it is a combination of psychological paranoid predisposition toward conspiracy theories, coupled with a culture that denigrates secular education.

There are a few. There appears to be more than there actually are because people tend to point at them and laugh.

Good point

The whole argument is stupid. Everyone KNOWS the Earth is banana-shaped. Duh.

Yes, and "god did it" coz it fits right in your hand.

I’ve met a few and personally know a flathearther. It’s mind boggling but he truly thinks the hearth is flat. He’s not stupid, on the contrary, he’s pretty clever. He has an inclination paranoia though and he is very anti government. He sees hidden plots everywhere. He thinks we are lied on everything. He thinks a lot of things are fabricated control us. He is often even right, but the hearth is round! Hope that helps you understand how rational people get there though... peace

Geoffrey, you are just part of the conspiracy. You and I both know there is no such place as Australia. Quit teasing the people and tell them the truth. We are paid actors.

I know, but I'm still waiting for two months pay, so time to make few waves!

They are mostly in the US of A. It's the result of the problems of the US Educational system.
It's called the 'dumbing down' of America.

I've met a couple here, along with a few people who believe the moon landings were hoaxed and that a secret cabal of lizard people/aliens/Jews/freemasons/etc. rule the world, but it's definitely less common here. Why that should be the case is unclear - we certainly have our fair share of idiots too, but for some reason the British variety tend to be more into UFOs, ancient astronauts, ley-lines and ESP-type woo than flat earth woo.

(My guess, incidentally, is that only a relatively small percentage of flat earthers actually believe the earth is or may be flat and the rest just find it amusing to pretend they believe in something so utterly ridiculous. Those that genuinely do are, I think and as @MichaelSpinler points out, an offshoot of the Creationist movement. Since Britain and Australia are both so much more secular than the US and creationists are themselves hard to find in the UK and Australia, it follows that we'll have fewer flat earthers too.)

Very true. It's even nuttier than deities!

@Geoffrey51 I think you're absolutely correct: whereas the existence/non-existence of deities cannot be proved one way or the other, the fact that Earth is not flat can very clearly be seen.

I am sure there a few everywhere. I actually met a guy here in N.Ireland a couple of years ago who said he was a flatearthist. I thought he was just spoofing me as he seemed pretty normal otherwise, however when I got to know him better I realised he was serious! He was also deeply into UFOs and conspiracy theories and a practicing catholic! Go figure!!

This isnt exactly an answer, but a clue ...our god-damn president is Trump. So flat earthers, while still shocking to realize they exist and admit it, aren't the dumbest people we have here.

( Looking to be snuggled out, preferably to the UK and help!!! Hurry!! The wall will trap me here with these fools!! I want to go to the motherland!)

I wish you luck with that one! I think the Motherland is not quite as matriarchal as she used to be. I believe the metaphorical lunatics from the asylum are not so metaphorical anymore! Just think Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage!

@Geoffrey51 Never mind that pair of clowns. Boris is an opportunist and Farage a wannabe, it’s Jacob Rees-Mogg that terrifies me, he is a complete throwback to the days of Lords of the Manor and serfs.....and he is being tipped as the next P.M.!

@Marionville That's a very good point actually. I had forgotten about him! That would not be good if he were PM?
