Would you rather date someone with opposing political views or opposing religious views?

I think I might just collect dogs for awhile and forget about dating...

No. I couldn't do either.

The mode of thinking is so bizarre with both that it spills over to everything else. Never happen!!

The problem is that these are only 2 of a myriad of reasons I wouldn't go on a 2nd date with someone.

@schway At my 'stage of life' It wouldn't make any difference. That mistake was made with my first wife.

Religious views. catholic girls will do ANYTHING when they get opened up.

atheist here.

Anything? May need details here!

Neither?! There's plenty of people out there who share my views. Why waste time with someone who doesn't suit?

If they can discuss rationally (by which I mean not sinking to name-calling, snits, yelling etc ) either would be fine, I love a debate.

I think the two generally tend to go hand in hand. However, if they are able to separate religion from politics, I’d probably go with opposing political views, provided they could behave like a rational human being and be respectful of other viewpoints. The minute they start talking about how certain minority groups don’t deserve the same rights as the white patriarchy, I’m out, though.

That's like asking if I'd rather cut off my left hand or right.

Religious.

I couldn't date someone with either. I answered all the questions on e harmony years ago and it told me to go back and change my answers that they didn't have a match for me! ?

Hahahahaha. Awesome 🙂

I could sooner date a liberal Christian than a conservative.

@PalacinkyPDX totally agree. I was married 22 years to an atheist conservative. Total nightmare.

One need look no farther than Jimmy Carter. One can argue how effective a President he was, but I believe any one who doesn't see what good moral deeds he has done is way off base- heading toward right wing political party before country. At near 90, yes he may teach Sunday school fairy tales; I used to teach Beowulf; he spends his weeks raising money and working to eradicate the African Guinea worm and has nearly done so. He still helps build houses for habitat for humanity.

@Beowulfsfriend agreed!

Oy. We're going to have to set some definitions here. I would date a theist, provided that they were a sane and respectful one. It might even be fun, because I still find the concept of religions interesting. I don't think I would be able to handle a conservative or libertarian of any religious stripe. Religious fundies are right out though.

Decided a long time ago (2016 election ?) to say NO to either one! ? to believe is a “god” is a little wacko for me already.

I think some religious entities and people are polarizing politics and interweaving them to such an extent that the question becomes almost moot. As some say, I would rather date a liberal Christian than a conservative. Historically, and evangelicals hate to hear this, or read any history of truth: it was liberal evangelicals in the 30's that helped the US come out of the Great Depression. People don't like to think in shades of grey. Marx was correct in so many ways when he said religion is the opiate for the people. Agreeing with that doesn't make you a Marxist when you realize his government system almost always ends in dictatorship. So, I haven't really given an answer for myself. Shades of grey, so, it depends on the individual, but I would lean toward forgiving religious beliefs before dangerous and damning political views.

Oven that for me they usually are the same thing, it’s a non issue. No!

I’d rather be alone.

Opposing Religious views are definitely easier for me to deal with than oppoding political views. Religious views I will respect if that's what gets them through their day. Their religion is their moral compass and personal belief system. As long as they don't impose it on me, I have no interest in arguing about it. However, political views can change society, change our rights and effect us on a real life level. Those are worth discussing, debating and understanding.

Defiantly political views, I love learning new things about politics. But religion, how can people not believe in science?

I don't mind dating someone with mildly or moderately diverse views....however, I can not accept a trump supporter in my dating circle simply because I despise just about everything he stands for and has done.
