Does anyone have suggestions, as to what to give my mom for her birthday ? Someone already suggested a Bible, she's religious.
I'm already taking her out to dinner.
Are there other suggestions ?

And what is wrong with a fancy plant arrangement, one that has different plants in one fancy container ?She can take care of it and remember you fondly all year.

Hitchens entire works.

I know right.

Best Mom Ever mug? Moms like everything. Except my mom hated gift certificates, because the person didn't personally pick something. She would have preferred a dollar mug over a 50 dollar certificate.

She probably has a bible already, what about a pretty scarf or some leather gloves?

Gift certificate for a spa day.

Or crack.

Spa day sounds great. ?

No "things", older people have enough damned things! A new experience, one she can remember & perhaps talk about (brag!l) to friends.........
I took my friend to a tea shop for formal lecture & tasting....not only cheap but fascinating!

I'm pretty much opposed to gifts for adults — giving or receiving. My rationale is that, as an adult, we have income and can buy ourselves the things we want and need, no guesswork required; and if I don't have enough money, I'm not looking for someone else to buy things for me. The one exception for me are gifts of time. I can't go on Amazon and buy your time and you can't buy mine — it has to be freely given. So, it means much more to me than someone instead planned out a day for us to do something together that I enjoy, e.g., theater, symphony, museum, light hiking, etc. Or, if I know someone really enjoys watching baseball, even though I mega-loathe spectator sports, I can make attending a local game part of my gift of time, and it may mean more to them because they know that I'm not doing it because I enjoy it but strictly because they do.

Buy her a massage or manicure

Aside from flowers or your joining her church..... What is mom interested in. What is her passion (aside from church) What has she always wanted, or what does she want most? And seriously, she's probably older than me. I don't necessarily want more stuff. My kids took me to a Quilt Museum for Mothers day. For me it was awesome, I think they liked it.

Thanks. ☺️

My mom liked expensive food treats...figs smoothered in honey, biscuits from England, etc. I usually got her enough to share with a few friends because Moms love to brag that their kids got them this special...she will love anything you give because it is you...

Sounds tasty.

If she's a cook as many woman are, I used to give my ex cooking classes as a present and she loved them. There are usually some exotic dishes they want to learn and maybe you give her two so she can take a friend etc.

Mother knew how I felt about religion and she was a bapist through and through. She seemed really happy when I took her to church, and even when I put five dollars in the plate. She walked out of that church, clutching my arm tightly, and her head held high. An hours time, and five dollars.

why not a whole day outing followed by the meal revisit places you went together when younger or a show/film someone else said it times the one thing you can't buy but you can give good luck

Ask her what she would like, perhaps?

There's always underware.

True.

@Wildgreens Maybe that plus something less functional/utilitarian.

The thread is old but gold. Thank you all for the replies. I was also thinking about what to get for my grandmothers’ birthday. The best suggestion I’ve found in this thread is time. Old people appreciate the time you’ve spent with them. Maybe because they know they haven’t got much left… I’ve decided to spend a whole day with my granny: take her to a restaurant and then drive to the known and dear places for both of us. I’ve been busy lately, and I think this might be a great opportunity to say “happy birthday grandma” in a way that she will remember. She turns 86, but she’s still quite active, so I think she’ll like such a present. Thank you.

I would stay away from religious items. How about a scarf or maybe a gift card to her favorite restaurant. A gift card tot he movie theater, or buy her tickets to a live show. Focus on what she likes outside of religion.

It's her day a picture with a nice frame. The picture should hopefully be of something meaningful to her. Save the teaching for another day.
