What are the current theories related to the creation of the universe? I've always thought the big bang theory was one but in another forum, one guy insisted it wasn't and he was kinda nasty about it.

People here are more intelligent and more respectful, so I'd like to get your thoughts on the subject...

The Universe was thought by religionists to have been created. Others supposed it was eternal. The nature of the red shift increasing with distance led to the Big Bang. Then we got the idea of an oscillating universe. The 'tuned constants' and the Anthropic Principle led to the Multiverse. Physicists see matter and energy created out of 'virtual' existence, hence the notion of a Big Bang arising from a virtual universe.

jeez that gater seems a bit of an idiot his whole argument is "because i say so" even religions usually try a little bit harder than that

@TheAstroChuck ive blocked him had he come up with an argument or some form of discussion fine but just wailing im right then becoming obnoxious fck that

The Big Bang Theory is definitely a theory of the origin of the universe. I eschew the word "creation" in this context; it has too many religious undertones.

Whos says the Universe was created? It wasn't - its always been here.

@gater
If the theory is correct, the universe is 13.7 billion years old. That's a long time, but a long way fro forever.

@Flyingsaucesir The Big Bang theory is an attempt to explain the beginning - there was no beginning. This simple concept evades so many, I assume its because they cannot comprehend anything that is infinite.

@Flyingsaucesir The Big Bang theorists want you to believe that there was a magical place before time and space existed. Seriously, their whole premise is retarded.

Turtles. All the way down.

Interesting trivia... Famous star with degrees in music and Physics PhD, champion of the big bang theory. His carrer as musician has been quite remarkable and yet managed to contribute to Physics as well. Hell of a guitar player..... Did I give it away already?

Currently, the prevailing theory about the origin of the universe is still the Big Bang. There have been, however, attempts to prove that the universe might have come about in a much simpler manner; most notably the “no-boundary proposal” by James Hartle and Stephen Hawking, as well as Alexander Vilenkin’s “tunneling proposal.” New research from the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute/AEI) in Potsdam and the Perimeter Institute in Canada suggests that there’s no possible way to circumvent the Big Bang — not yet, anyway.

The truth is that the Universe has always been here. Time, space and matter are all infinite.

that's sort of what Fred Hoyle thought, but he was wrong

@TheAstroChuck Every time you say that you prove how clueless you are.

@gater what are you basing that on

@weeman Those are facts.

@gater facts don't just exist you must have theories replicable evidence provable science other wise its just an echo chamber full of shit

@weeman Space, time and matter are all infinite - that's a fact - if you can't comprehend that then the problem lies with you.

@TheAstroChuck Your understanding of physics is rubbish

@gator is a troll, and that's a euphemism. He makes claims and has absolutely nothing to back them up. Ignore it.

He says the big bang theory is no longer accepted as an answer to how life began? News to me. It is one of the explanations that I have heard. I am sure it is more nuanced then just a big bang.

Probably more nuanced, that's why I'm looking for a better explanation cause he wasn't forthcoming with details.

Not life, thats another theory

@sellinger if he is not forthcoming with a different theory how is the current one wrong ? Think you have a troll on your hands
