Oh yeah... Y2K !! It was an interesting "glitch" due to lack of planning in lots of software deployed around the world where the concern was that the code was not going to know what to do on new years eve going from 99 to 00. There were huge task force teams everywhere to prepare for the worst with computers running systems like air traffic control, the power grid, etc. Obviously nothing happened .... Now, until the next chapter Y3K but none of us will be around to find out if we learned the lesson
Fortran is and always has been the ultimate number cruncher. It was the Fortran code to END PROGRAM... 999 that triggered the scare because Fortran is used for almost everything. It could have caused a catastrophe. But somebody saw it coming. I delayed driving 3000 miles to Inuvik until it was 2000 and I was sure everything worked..
