Makes me hungry.....

Generally all fasting does is make me really really hungry

Nope. I don't ever fast, on purpose. I do the small meals throughout the day. Basically eat whenever my body tells me I need to eat and also what it tells me I need to eat at the time. I eat 100% plant-based, making sure I get balanced nutrition, not cutting out any nutrients (not low carb, low fat, low anything). I don't do diets.

Not for me.. I’m one of these people that eats small meals more frequently. I maintain a high metabolism, clear mind and low weight despite severe hypothyroidism. Fasts have widely mixed reviews, none seem to be incredibly scientific.

No. It makes me feel like I’m dying—at the very least, faint. My blood sugar drops quickly if I go more than 3-5 hours without food. No, I don’t have diabetes. It’s simply a part of the machine I’m not willing to try to exert control.

*about to faint

Wish we could edit on phone.

@BlueWave it's sometimes fun to not edit and just go with it

@BlueWave you can't? That's weird.

Edited on my phone. ☎

Not eating gives me a headache. I eat small, healthy meals throughout the day.

With an ectomorph body type, I have a fast metabolism, low weight and clear mind. Have never been on a diet.

My mother was considered a health nut and exercise fanatic. Thanks, Mom!

I love hiking to alpine lakes surrounded by white glaciers and jagged mountain peaks. After dark, I look up and feel awed by the glowing Milky Way and billions of sparkling stars. We all need more low-level ecstasy in our lives.

Hiking is a transcendent, uplifting experience for me. I feel most centered and whole high in the mountains.

I do IF every day, for example yesterday I ate within a 3 hour window. I've also done a couple of 5 day water only fasts. I feel better, and the longer fasts are wonderfully mind-focusing. It helps that I eat a near zero-carb diet, plenty of healthy fat.

Five day water fast? I would eat a couch

@TBthree Actually, not. The hunger passes, it is fleeting. Running on energy stores is something we are naturally programmed to do. It has a number of metabolic benefits.

1

An occasional, dedicated rebellion to self-indulgence has it's small benefits to one's view of themselves. I can't do a real—no food at all—fast, but a once in a while drop of a few enjoyed things can be helpful—a way of tangibly bringing moderation to one's life.

Cognitive benefits yes! But not for extended periods, then I think it’s the opposite effect.

Any extreme state like fasting, sleep deprivation, sensory deprivation, etc. can produce an altered state of consciousness that zaps the mind. This can have an antidepressant effect, kind of like shock therapy, I believe.

So a potential positive effect?

@TBthree The theory is, I believe, that the altered state can break through a negative mindset, enabling a perhaps to look at things with fresh eyes, perhaps even gain valuable insights into oneself and the world. Some research research is being done now on some psychedelic drugs to see if they can alleviate depression or other mental health issues. If effective, this would help a person become less dysfunctional, which would certainly be positive.

As far as making one a better person, this is more of a philosophical question, it seems to me. Built on the medical model, psychology has always focused on addressing and alleviating the negative, not enhancing the positive, which has been a source of criticism. Perhaps it will do more of this in the future.

[healthline.com] Fasting can be a bit like unplugging yourself and plugging yourself back in.

Does it make one a better person in any way?

@TBthree there is scientific evidence to support it making you a healthier person not a better person, I don’t see it as a pursuit the mind. One can stop eating for three days and still be an asshole.

@ArdentAtheist That is my understanding too on the science side. The Catholic church once again just encouraged fasting and prayer to help the current and millennia old crisis.

Is fasting now (in the present day) a form of self mind control by religion, a form of religious discipline to feel like an individual is accomplishing something, a whole religion community effort toward good, a 'magical spell' that can produce results, and/or a bit of ordered punishment to spread across the religious community.

Perhaps other reasons...?

2

Fasting is a practice that is usually associated with religious practice but is not limited to it. Some people do it for various health reasons, and it takes many different forms. Personally it never floated my boat and now that I'm diabetic it probably would be dangerous to even try.

It reduces blood pressure temporarily... any idea what other health benefits

I'm a diabetic and I'm considering it. Just monitor your glucose carefully and keep some hard candy around. I like Werther's.

Yes, but I can't do it now, since I'm in recovery for intestinal cancer.

Glad you are recovering
