Tomorrow is Labor Day. A day to celebrate working people and organized labor. Since Reagan, this country has taken deliberate steps to limit and devalue working people in general and organized labor in particular. The history of this is too long to document here, but both parties have been guilty of this, perhaps the Republicans more so. And it continues today. So in the midst of your weekend BBQ or camping trip, take a moment to consider what kind of holiday you would be having without the plumbers, truck drivers, grocery checkers, nurses, longshoremen, welders and all the rest of the folks who are picking up extra overtime hours this weekend so they can make ends meet. Here's to American Labor.
We can thank organized labor/unions for the weekend, the 40-hour work week, the minimum wage, workplace safety, and retirement and health benefits.
I worked in the trucking industry as a teamster. I had excellent pay, benefits, retirement plan. I was able to retire with full pension benefits after 30 years paying into the pension fund and I was 56 years old. I have been retired for 24 years, have an excellent pension, SS, IRA and savings for a secure financial future (barring any catastrophic happenings beyond my control). This was all afforded by the social atmosphere of the time which does not exist any more for anyone.
