Talking with a friend while playing Dungeons & Dragons, a question came up. In a reality with magic and powerful deities, can you be an atheist?
Are there flat earthers?
There will always be those that believe stuff despite reason or evidence to the contrary.
So, yes. Of course there will be atheists in such a world. Unless god has removed free will!!!
Maybe you could. I guess it would depend on how you play it. Like in the elder scrolls the nine divines get their power mostly from worship (why the thalmor banned Talos worship). Let’s say if everyone in the world became an atheist, then technically these gods would be non-existent. So I guess if you applied that to the game then sure.
If you lived in a world where there WERE deities, and there was proof, then how could you NOT believe in them? You can't just deny something exists if it is there. I mean, you can, but then you would be like a theist in our world when it comes to science lol.
Half of my table is agnostic or atheist so I will ask next wed but for now I would think you could still deny that there is a highest power and concede that there are a bunch of lower ones.
Just a friendly reminder:
Chaotic Neutral =/= Chaotic Dumb
I think one could consider themselves an athiest but they would probably piss off many “gods” along the way.
Play. The operative word is "play". So for the duration of the game, perhaps you play at believing in the game's deities.
You can, but you’ll die quickly. Of course, it’s only a game.
I'll take the terry Pratchett Disc World paradigm on this.
The strength of a God depends on the force of belief of its adherents. So if a sufficient number of people decide to go on strike and become atheists, there would be no more gods.
Remembering that Granny Weatherwax is an atheist for the sake of the Disc. If she believed then she'd be a fire and sword crusader like no other. She explained as much to Mightily Oats in Carpe Jugulum.
Well, let's break down the word and take a look at its meaning. A-theist : A- a prefix meaning "without". Theist- believer in god(s).
From this, we can extrapolate that atheist means; without belief in god(s). If you look it up on Google you will find a similar definition.
As you can see, this rules out the possibility that an atheist can believe in a deity (god). It also defined the term in very specific language. Which means an atheist could believe in anything, as long as it isn't a god.
Are people born with knowledge of the divine in this scenario or must it be learned?
Being an atheist means I lack a belief in a god(s).
If someone could show me rock-solid evidence that a god exists, I could no longer be an atheist since I know a god(s) exists.
That doesn't mean I would pray to it or worship it though, only acknowledge it.
Interesting hypothetical question. Deities don't necessarily rule out atheism - it would be possible to argue that they're actually just a more advanced but entirely natural (rather than supernatural) race, as at least some members of societies that developed cargo cults may have done. The same goes for magic - the inhabitants of a fictional universe where it exists, such as the D&D universe or the Discworld, might discover that it's actually an entirely natural process and they'd stumbled upon ways to influence that process before even knowing it existed.
