“Molecules” made from three photons have been created by physicists in the US.

Normally, photons will not bind together to form molecule-like structures

The photon triplets were made by firing laser light into an atomic gas and the researchers believe that their technique could be useful for creating entangled photons for quantum-information systems.

First, the light creates a “Rydberg polariton” in the atomic gas. This is a particle-like collective state in which a highly-excited electron is shared by several atoms.

This polariton propagates through the gas like a slow-moving photon with non-zero mass.

The index of refraction of the gas near the Rydberg polariton is often modified such that other photons will bunch-up with the polariton, causing an interaction that creates molecules of light.

The team is now trying to create repulsive interactions between photons to create a crystalline lattice of light.

creating entangled photons for quantum-information systems

I am interested in seeing how they intend to make this work. We currently have entangled particles, but no way to transmit any real data (other than +1/-1 spin). Faster than light communication would be game changing.

How are you relating cartoon gem people to photon molecules? I suppose everything is possible in some dimension of this multiverse, but not sure of your point.

@birdingnut in Steven universe, the gems are physical creatures made of light. So if we can make physical objects from light, and then figure out how to bring them to life, we could in theory make light based gem beings like in the show.

@algaefromspace But technically, we are ALL made of light. Matter is energy which converts to light. We are all the same photon.

Yes, the mind boggling complexity of life seems impossible to have happened randomly but there a few false assumption in the case you've made. Firstly, order from chaos doesn't violate the laws of physics. I think you're referring to the over simplification that the second law of thermodynamics means 'disorder increases over time' but 'disorder' refers to entropy in a closed system and all the resources life has like food, air, water, sunlight, etc. is not a closed system. Also life evolved by natural selection not randomness. So let's address mind boggling. In 1 eukaryotic cell there are 100s of millions to billions of chemical reactions per second. So you take that mind boggling number of chemical reactions per second that can happen in a cell, multiply that by the mind boggling amount of those you can fit in all the oceans of the world, and then multiply all those mind boggling seconds by the mind boggling time there is in 4 billion years and you get the mind boggling complexity of life.

The Argument from Incredulity or Ignorance. You are only about the six billioneth person to fall for it.

Imagine, storing data at the molecular level. Computations would be exponentialy more precise and powerful. Yet this is the first I've heard of photonic molecular structures. Ultimately, this is the future of optic information transfer in closed systems, just way beyond our current ability to utilize optical information transfers.

Quantum computing is the future. I'm a computer nerd, and even I find it near impossible to imagine how a static system will function with on/off/maybe, instead of just on/off.

That's way over my head!! A photon has zero mass and zero charge. I will have a close look at this but I doubt that I will grasp the concept. Very interesting, thank you for posting.

Well, your interest is welcome. Occasionally someone on this website seems interested in physics, but they're usually behind by about 15 years.
