The saying means you can either have a cake forever or eat said cake, thus you are no longer able to keep it forever. Have it or eat it, not both, because you can't have the cake you already ate.

@Duke I think Duke/Cake is pretty funny... But I wasn't explaining anything about your joke, per sé. Just the original colloquialism. It's like a paradox. But technically, once digested it's no longer cake, so I'd have a hard time thinking of you as Duke/Cake, lol
