It's been a while since I posted on here. I'm 48 openly gay in Taylors, SC near Greenville. Pretty much a full on atheist but still consider myself to have "Christian" values. At least true Christian values not the phone Christianity of the "religious" "right".

Feel free to reply to any comment by clicking the "Reply" button.I'm guessing you're dealing with the condemnation of the fundies versus the decency of the liberal notion of Christianity. And in all fairness, the liberal notion ignores some very restrictive rules about sex. I don't know what it's like living in Texas, or how attached to Christianity you are in your heart, but in my ignorance I can't help concluding that homosexuality and Christianity make poor bedfellows and atheism with humanist values (which are similar in many ways) would be the best move in the long run.

I was going to ask what you believe "Christian Values" are. I see that has been addressed a bit but I am still curious what you would consider a "christian value. I was a hard core Christian for half my life and I believe I have a higher moral standard as an atheist than I ever had as a Christian.

Nothing wrong with being gay. However, you are probably in the wrong part of the US. The christian part is quite weird.

Well things are improving everywhere. Dating is non-existent for me as I'm 48 that's beyond dead in the south. And even among freethinking atheists I'm an odd ball.
@DanielPatten Might be time for a move? Would have a better chance in somewhere like LA or NYC. In the South, you'd have a hard time finding a partner. If you do, most will probably hate you. That's a fact. I wish you the best of luck!
I should hang out here more often I never get this kind of discussion where I live and work.

Glad you're welcoming the voices of reason Daniel! Enjoy the debates and I hope you find love and happiness.
I saw Dan Barker speak and he talked about how those values that are common to all religions- like don’t kill people and take care of your children - are HUMAN values not religious values.
Another interesting perspective, the book “The righteous mind” looks at how human values developed.

i don't understand what christian values are. are people who have never been christian devoid of morals or ethics? why do they even have to be called christian values? are they not human values? i have never been christian a day in my life, and i have ethics and morals. why do these have to be identified as christian?

i will add something: if jesus existed, more or less as described (by people who never met him, possibly because he didn't exist, possibly just because he'd been dead a few decades when they were born) he was jewish. what he is said to have preached is recognizable to anyone who knows ANYTHING about judaism as jewish values. so how come no one talks about jewish values?

You both make good points. I guess growing up in the south and attending a southern Baptist Church I'm still associate "Christian" and "good". Perhaps I should adjust my thinking.
I don't define where I got my morals and values from because I believe they're innate... yours too. If some of them mirror christianity so what. Maybe that's because they're obvious to well meaning people.

Never thought of it that way but you are correct.
Morals are innate in as far as they are evolutionary. They were born of determining the best way to get along with each other. 'treat others as you would want to be treated' or get kicked out of the tribe.
