What are your views on polygamy?
Monogamy is there to avert violence. If polygamy is allowed then some males no longer have access to sex and as a result conflict will ensue. Waring cultures use polygamy because they expect many of the males to go off and die and the promise of multiple wives makes the offer tempting. Even if you're one of those "free love" people and you believe in sharing partners then you must account for people who are innately disgusted with sharing wives and you must understand that there is a ver strong evolutionary reason we have that feeling of disgust built into us. It is to prevent disease.
I'm not certain humans (especially the male species) are naturally monogamous.
@Alicia_J There definitely is a pressure for them not to be monogamous but as a policy to avert violence we have chosen monogamy and produced civilisation from it. one argument I've heard from polygamists is that it was widely accepted in the tribes before the roman conquests but its pretty clear that they were violent and there was enough infighting to prevent real progress being made
Monogamy doesn't actually seem successful at preventing violence, IMHO.
Monogamy is more likely derived from selfish genetics, EG keeping your own offspring healthy and successful and not those of competing males.
We don't need to bow to evolutionary or social pressures; we can use reason instead.
@Gabriel Making the step from selecting my own mate to eugenics is quite the leap, wouldn't you say?
I studied philosophy in school, and I enjoyed it. However, philosophy and philosophers often make things sound reasonable when a reasonable person would find otherwise.
Also, listening to people talk philosophy on youtube might be useful if you actually know the works being talked about; it is today's soapbox and while useful for some things, it can lead you astray.
I was talking about domestic violence in monogamous relationships, and the freedom to choose my own mate.
Not the government, nor the church, or even my peers.
Why is it always one male and multiple females - many of them under-age? Here's a thought experiment: What if the world all of a sudden became matriarchal, and men were subservient to women. Would society be different?
(I may make this a separate thread if encouraged...)
I know of a woman living in polygamy with two men. Works for them. (not religious motivation).
I see nothing intrinsically wrong with polygamy, what negative stigmas that are attached to it are, frankly, cultural. Where it is culturally acceptable it appears to work just fine. Conversely, where it is deemed unacceptable, infidelity is endemic, suggesting that for a sizable proportion of the population, monogamy is at best, an unrealistic expectation. Obviously polygamy isn't, and shouldn't be, for everyone, yet I am uncomfortable with the idea that such an important, personal life choice should be imposed upon people who would, by people who would not.
