Except that in most cases, it’s really not. There are a very few who take the idea of “Satan” seriously (often teenagers), but the vast majority of Satanists either have a pretty sophisticated, psychological interpretation of what they believe, and/or are libertarians, secularists and free thought activists who use the symbol of christianity’s boogeyman because they know how it freaks people out. It’s a shock tactic to make their point about religion and religious liberty in general. (Most of the ones I’ve met are both very smart and a lot of fun!)

@The-Krzyz I think Jack is referring to its status with regards to the first amendment. They've actually won some great victories in the ongoing struggle over separation of church and state. It seems christians aren't so keen on displaying a cross on government property, if doing so means a pentagram can be displayed there too.

@JimG FFRF have spoken how the Satanists have helped further their (FFRF) cause.

@JimG I never forget how a Christian group acquired a radio license in Woollongong, NSW and were then horrified to learn that they had to allow the local satanists time to broadcast.

@ailurophile I think the LaVey crowd is more philosophical and psychological in its focus, using the symbolism of “Satan” as a tool to question their own and society’s preconceptions about morality, sexuality, etc., seeking a more personal liberation. At least, that’s how they started - less political and in-your-face than the Satanic Temple folks. Still, I’d be surprised if there wasn’t some crossover of ideas and people!

@JimG Everyone other than the gdbtherers were still laughing years late. Sadly the rules were twisted by the ruling body the ABA. Even the Australian system couldn't stomach a continuation of the regime and at an enquiry in about 2005 the ABA was merged and made to disappear.
