How is it that I can so effectively see into others' lives and recognize their shortcomings, but I'm so inadequate when recognizing my own? Is it because I don't have any shortcomings?

That's very unlikely. EVERYONE has shortcomings.

So being unable to recognize your own shortcomings is one of your shortcomings.

No, it's cognitive dissonance.

Perhaps because you don't take the time to properly consider it. Talk therapy is wonderful if you can afford it. If not, talking to yourself is second best. I recommend talking out loud. I do it in the car when I have a long drive. I "check in" with myself. It's quite therapeutic.
