A HUG BASED ECONOMY -

I've got the solution to all this income inequality, the minimum wage issue, the working poor, and all the other financial woes that plague us as a society. Let's retire money as the medium of exchange and put the country on a hug based economy.

Are you mad?! I can hear you crying, but hear me out. Sufficient sums of money are difficult for many people to come by but everyone has an inexhaustible supply of hugs. Overnight, we'd all have plenty of "currency" with which to meet all of our needs.

  • A gallon of gas -- 1 hug

  • A new car -- 12 hugs

  • A week's worth of groceries -- 5 hugs

  • A new house -- 200 hugs

See? Plenty of currency for everyone and all our financial problems are resolved. "What about inflation?" I can hear you asking. No problem, just give out more hugs. Hey, 10,000 hugs for a gallon of milk may be time consuming but it can be done.

I'll take my Nobel anytime.

That is the way it is only this time with money.

It's a nice thought, but I can't transfer a hug to Amazon.

As it is, our money is not backed by anything. Used to be backed by silver or gold. So, in America, a dollar has value only because we all agree it does. If you look at a dollar, it's paper with something printed on it. A medium of exchange. A hug could be a medium of exchange and have value if we all agree it does.

Exactly. The hug based economy revolves around this very idea. It could just as easily have been a 'slap in the face' based economy but that would get painful pretty quick.

This 30 seconds expresses my feelings about hugs:

You try to hug me, I'll kick you in the nuts.

Not everyone likes hugs.

Even fewer people liked being kicked in the nuts so that wouldn't work as an alternative.

@Sgt_Spanky My point exactly. I'm there to buy a product, NOT to make someone feel better. I just want to get what I need and go on with my day.

Maybe a Hug-based digital currency. LOL!

This new economy would be a burden on the CDC. It would also be prejudicial toward people with certain birth defects and some amputees. It would definitely be a problem at retail outlets on Black Fridays, major film premiers, and sports arenas/stadiums/parks. I can see myriad ways in which this system would lead to disaster. Perhaps it should return to committee to be considered more fully.

There's going to be obstacles to overcome but identity theft, robbery -- all money based crime will be a thing of the past. Almost certainly replaced by hug based crime because people can corrupt anything.

Meh. At least I'm trying.

@Sgt_Spanky -- I commend you for the good try, sir, but I remain concerned regarding the spread of disease, and the potential loss of life at Macy's sales.

@evidentialist And you should be. It's gonna be a breeding ground of virile infection...and sales!

Those 12 hugs for a new car, all the same person or am I hugging 12 sperate people? Would a 12 second hug work?

that would depend entirely on the payment policy of the business owed.

I like to hug but not everyone appreciates hugs. People who don't like it usually offer a hug similar to the dreaded dead cold fish handshake.

They could try that but if the person being hugged felt the hug lacked substance they could sue for payment and court costs which would mean even more hugs. Better just get it right the first time.

Understood you are a sucker for hugs, but regret economics works in a very different way my friend. You need a good cuddler instead of a nobel.

I've already cleared a space for the Nobel.

This system would impoverish so many who are on the autism spectrum. We'd have to build "don't touch me" shelters.

Debtor's prison. Deadbeats will not be tolerated. The hug based economy is harsh and does not allow for any exceptions.

@Donotbelieve Under the hug based economy they would be. That's where the proxy-huggers come in but, like I said, how would they be paid?

@Sgt_Spanky So, in your world discrimination is alive and well. Good to know.

@kiramea Are you aware this is a parody thread and nothing serious is actually being discussed here? You and at least one other seem to be struggling with that concept given the contentious tone of your replies.

Wow! I have been boosting the economy without even knowing it! I love giving and getting hugs...I would work for free since I have plenty of hugs to spare...ha ha ha fun

You are going to be a rich woman in the hug based economy.

@Sgt_Spanky Already am...and time to spread it around, I think! 🙂 The hugs, I mean....

I prefer working for money and getting hugs for free.

Let go of the past and embrace the future. Pun intended.

You might be on to something that will revolutionize the world's economy.
Of course some people will be better huggers....Recently a woman gave me a full body press hug and kissed my ear. That was quite a hug I won't soon forget.

That would be 2-3 times the fiscal value of a standard hug.
