People seem far more concerned about the song ‘Baby, It's Cold Outside’, than people who are actually cold outside.

The song was very well done, but the product of a different time with different cultural norms.

I really don't care for when peopel reach into the past and tke something and just it by today's standards and values, instead of putting it into the proper cultural context.

I don’t see how the two things are even related; you can care about both.

Societies constantly evolve and, in doing so, purge the shitty aspects from the mainstream rather than cling onto them. It’s crazy how people resist something so trivial whilst acknowledging how unimportant it is.

Good music is good music. Fun lyrics are fun lyrics. Neither have anything to do with the homeless dilemma that plagues the entire world. Some places worse than others. There is no need to compartmentalize one's appreciation for good music and fun lyrics and one's feelings for the homeless. They are two entirely different things. Because of this, I shall sing my songs and help the fellow standing on the corner in any way I can. We are all sharing the same planet and we are all going in the same direction.

To that end I give you this song I dashed off just for this time of year:

JINGLE SALES

Shopping craze
Hectic days
Dashing through the maze
Told my shrink I need a drink
And a year with double pay

Running through the mall
Causing hearts to fibrilate
To the sales we go
Hoping we’re not late

Standing in the lines
Counting bills I have not paid
Taking out my card
Spending more than’s made

Shopping craze
Hectic days
Dashing through the maze
Told my shrink I need a drink
And a year with double pay

Wishing I were home
Lying in a quiet place
Chucking down cold beer
Punching Santa’s face

Headache’s growing strong
Humor fades and temper flares
Shucking all my grace
Running for the stairs

Shopping craze
Hectic days
Dashing through the maze
Told my shrink I need a drink
And a year with double pay

Exit from the mall
Cooling breezes on my face
Start the car and go
Throttle opened wide
Oh, what fun it is to go
And find a place to hide

Shopping craze
Hectic days
Dashing through the maze
Told my shrink I need a drink
And a year with double pay

Am I missing something, who's outraged at that song?? Sounds to me like media overhype........

I prefer the version in the movie Elf. Being outraged at a song that’s 50 years old is a lazy persons way of acting like their doing something about it. If anything radio stations should play the song and then take advantage of the issue at hand and use it as an opportunity to talk about such issues. I mean seriously how dare a man that is attracted to a woman try and convince her to stay and spend more time with him. Or am I missing something?

You're being rational. Stop that! You have to view the lyrics as a man trying to commit date rape. The PC fanatics don't see it as a seduction, they see a crime taking place. This won an Academy award for Best Original Song of 1944, now it's being called a rape anthem.

People are stupid.

I've made similar comments about the whole kneeling for the anthem issue... If you're more offended for someone kneeling for an anthem than you are by the fact that unarmed kids get shot by police officers simply due to the colour of their skin... Your priorities are messed up... :/

The only people I here making noise about it are the ones that are for it. The ones fighting back against the War on Christmas or the ones who claim to be anti PC but seem to get very upset when anyone questions their beliefs.

This is what usually happens; people get worked up over something then they take it too far. The idea behind #MeToo is a good one but it was predictable that it would eventually be twisted to include everything from a harmless glance to a classic song.

There's always going to be some percentage of the population that can't get anything right. I think most of them are Trump voters.

What are they gonna do next? Ban Judas Priest because of those guys who blew their fucking brains out back in the day?

1

It seems like a silly innocent song to me. How many times have you been out with a group of people and someone says that they should get home and someone in the groups say stay for another one. I wonder how much people's interpretations of the lyrics come from their own wicked intentions.

Meanwhile, gang-banging hip hop/rap songs continue to be played on radio stations without any problem. Apparently, some people have forgotten that there are two knobs on the radio.

2

Well said!

1

No one really cares about it much except the "War on Christmas" types who spend their time being outraged at the slightest criticism of white bread hetero-normative America.

By the way everyone, whatever opinions of this song you may have, I will be singing it on Friday evening with my choir in the first of our series of Xmas concerts....it is a delightful song to sing, and I will sing it with great gusto. Whether anyone in the audience will be thinking of the homeless people who are living rough in the cold at this time of the year I can’t say. I will have preceded that concert performance by doing what I always do on Fridays, handing out food and tea and sympathy at the local Food Bank. On the Saturday, the day following the concert we will be singing at the local homeless shelter and delivering food there. I feel we should be able to separate the two things, as I do, and can assure you, I for one, will certainly be singing that song In concert with my chorister friends without a shred of guilt.

Good for you xx

@273kelvin I used to work for an international charity prior to retiring....I can’t let go of it. Homelessness is a crime perpetrated on the poor by uncaring governments of every hue. I’m on my soap box now! My favourite group a-ha work tirelessly to highlight social issues, one of them homelessness, one of the reasons I’m so devoted to them. Here is a song they wrote to bring the issue of people who live on the street into public consciousness, the video was filmed by Lauren Savoy the American wife of the guitarist and songwriter of the trio Paal Waaktaar...There’s Never a Forever Thing.

3

When did the lyrics from an old song become this important??

It's in response to the #MeToo movement. People started complaining the song promoted date rape.

2

This seems to be correct.

2

We get sentimental/guilty around Christmas but the new year will be the same for homeless people.

2

The only people I see 'concerned' about that song seem to be republicans... Someone please show me anyone who is actually offended by that song! I believe the republican conspiracy group hears 1 person not like something & they start posting memes which the base jump on like fleas on a dog. It gives them something to cry about while trying to make Democrats look bad. The problem lies in that Democrats don't question nor fight back about the ignorance being thrown at them.

It is not a "Republican" issue. It is a current "Feminist" issue...ask your wife.

@dahermit excuse me? Before making a greater ass out of yourself you might want to read my bio.
Beyond that the only people I see getting their panties in a wad are white male gun loving republicans.

Did you see the news item about the homeless in Edinburgh a couple of days ago? At least they are doing something practical to help in the homeless, the Social Bite Village has just been launched in Edinburgh and is going to be rolled out all over Scotland. Thousands slept out recently all over Scotland to highlight the plight of the homeless. I believe that if Scotland was an independent country again, it would be amongst the most progressive and socially conscious countries in Europe. Whilst they are shackled to England they don’t have the full autonomy to implement the policies most Scots want. Devolution has always been a limited excercise in democracy, the Scots have a completely different mindset from the English, at least those south of The Wash, and have more compassion than the Tory southerners.

Yes I did see that and more power to their elbow. A much better use of good drinking time than worrying about this song. Where does it end, do I have to throw out all my Muddy Waters records?

In a city in Utah, the solution was to build small individual homes, and give them to the homeless to help them regain their footing.?

@WayneDalton They are doing the same thing in Scotland, starting in Edinburgh.

3

Of course. The latter concern might actually require action to affect, while the former requires little more than flapping your trap.

2

So true.

3

Yes because if they bitched about that then someone might suggest that they bring some of these people into their homes.?
