Long before it was called "Christmas" by the early Christian church, this time of year was celebrated by pagan peoples as heralding the re-birth of the sun. For example, Stonehenge was built 3,000 years before Christ. I cannot understand why Christians have to get so worked up over something they nicked from elsewhere. Jesus almost certainly wasn't even born in December, anyway, let alone in 1AD! [livescience.com]

What do you mean "Was celebrated by pagans"?

It means celebrated the equinox.
and they truly did so

@EMC2 I was reffering to the WAS. I'm in UK and we have Pagans who still celebrate the old way.

@Savage Oh sorry, I see that. Yes I know two Wiccas and it is a very serious celebration. As for me I see it as mother nature and her I do celebrate

@EMC2 Ditto

@savage Exactly that. Just as one says that Christian mass was celebrated two thousand years ago. Or that the earth was circling the sun long before life evolved upon it. They both still are, of course.

There is a great secret to the birth and death of the man/god that we all call Jesus Christ. We find that nobody knows when he was born. Gospel writings have two versions and they differ in order to put him in the right place at the right time. Even so, there are no records outside of biblical writings. Nothing in history backs up the stories. There is no time stamp to this event. Moving on into his death we again find two versions according to the bible. One is early morning about 9 AM and the other is in the afternoon. The death of Jesus is associated with a religious event that changes from year to year. We cannot pinpoint a real death for Jesus on any calendar.

I know when my loved ones were born and I also know when they died and can find where they are buried. This cannot be done in the case of Jesus although many places are said to be his birth and death place. People argue over this and none of it can be found in any scripture. It simply is not there in any provable way. Yes, there is a great secret to the birth and death of Jesus.

Happy non-religious-midwinter festival!

... and a wonderful Yule to you too.

@Petter Got my suspicions that Yule involves Norse gods somewhere! Maybe just wood spirits.

I have often wondered the same thing!

Thats why real fundamentalists like the JWs don't celebrate it

And the esthetic Jews still deny the existence of Jeebus Chrust as well.
