Well the church has had 2,000 years (call it 80 generations if you like) to convey its supposedly compelling value proposition. Despite this ... and the unearned respect and deference it enjoyed throughout history until recently ... what has it got to show for itself?

Only about a third of humans identify as Christians -- even in a lame cultural sense. Maybe at most a fourth of that one-third believe the holy book is literally true. So they've failed to win hearts and minds.

They are poised to lose their position as the world's largest religion to Islam well before the end of this century. So they're failing in terms of raw numbers.

They have a history of genocide, authoritarianism, sexual assault, etc. So they're failing in terms of doing things to ease human suffering and increase human freedom.

His story is an amalgamation of various similar stories passed down. His and Buddha's gained some traction over time for various politic reasons and expediency.

Plus the basic fact that violence has actually increased because of his "sacrifice". Seems he totally wasted his effort. This is, again, why there is no heaven only levels of hell.

1. have to accept the ridiculous concept that there is a god
2. have to accept the ridiculous concept that he had a son
3. have to accept that this all powerful being couldn’t think of any other way to absorb the sins of the world than to have his son murdered in a manner so sadistic that it boggles the imagination.

He seems to have been unsuccessful at most of the things he tried. Have you ever read anywhere about what a great carpenter he was? Some god.
