What kind of job, how much is the wage? There are so many questions, so don't judge when you have no idea.

He doesn't know their circumstances. They could be posers or they could be genuinely needy. He doesn't know if they have means to get there on a regular basis, or to purchase the uniform, clean the uniform, have daily showers for work. If they have no address they can't fill out the legal paperwork for work. Bottom line, guy with the yellow sign is just being a jerk. You don't know what's going on in their lives.

True story. In my final job before recent retirement, I drove a small school bus for a route that had only homeless kids that were either staying in shelters or with relatives in a nearby city while attending school in my city. One day I was stopped at a traffic light where a pretty convincing-looking homeless guy was begging from vehicles.A couple of middle school kids on my bus actually started making fun of this guy and against my orders, lowered their windows and dropped a couple dollars out the window for their amusement of watching him scramble to pick up the cash. I pointed out to them that they had no room to be making fun of someone for being homeless and one of them actually got away with complaining that I insulted him by pointing out that he was homeless. PC gone mad and in this case the kid was merely using it as a weapon to get me in trouble as his feelings were not hurt and he thought the whole thing was funny. These were coincidentally poor Hispanic kids who were doing this. Yes, these nimrod kids were too young to maybe know what jerks they were being, but since their behavior in this case was pretty normal for them, it was one of the last straws before I quit, since I could not get any of them disciplined for behavior or transfer myself off the route even with all my seniority( the management wanted to force me out and this was their method). I'd had enough bullshit from the kids, the schools, and management that I retired to get away from the stress. The schools and bus company would never suspend or kick them off the bus because they were poor, minority, and homeless, but the kids knew this so they could act as they pleased. It became abusive, not having a monitor on the bus to deal with them for me.

Point of rant is: Sometimes both the homeless and those who judge them are pretty clueless about themselves and others, displaying huge deficits in insight or empathy.

Homelessness is a sad thing and making fun of the truly needy is wrong. I've worked with some homeless people and it is sad. Those who don't want to work make it harder on those who can't. We have a real problem in this country and it is getting worse every day.

There is a guy who stands in a spot in town with a sign and I'm a vet. I told him he should copy his dd214 and I would give him a couple bucks and some phone numbers to call. He didn't take my advice.

I was in Seattle last summer and gave a woman a buck. She came up to me the next day and asked again. I said I have yesterday. She said my check hasn't come. To which I replied neither has mine, I live cheaply so I can travel. She left.

Beautiful ?????? Had a woman in Richmond who was panhandling a couple of years ago decline some Gatorade on a 100 degree day and demanded money instead.

The couple said that she needed to get of the heat and hydrate since they were EMT’s they felt like she could be in danger.

She then ran across the street to her newly leased Ford Escape and when the couple confronted her she then ran into a McDonald’s and requested that someone call the cops and found herself being charged with assault and she was outed for faking being homeless.

Which we found out later had happened in two other cities in Virginia. ??

Those things do happen. Seen them myself. But it is the rarity. Many homeless don't beg. In Los Angeles alone there are 90000 homeless people. Quite a few homeless even work. This country is screwed up and getting worse. I've worked with homeless vets. And now I work with after school autistic kids, and some are homeless.

@Beowulfsfriend You're a better, stronger man than I am. I wouldn't be able to stand the frustration and heartache of your work.

@Beowulfsfriend Much respect for you and your work.
As a former law enforcement officer I can tell you that dealing with the homeless is a tedious and frustrating task and sadly for them they’re easy targets for drug dealers, minor street gangs and sadly even law enforcement.

And for those that were legit we did what we could to look out for them but sadly I’ve personally came across a panhandler that had a yearly income of $85k, drove a 5 series BMW and lived in a very nice suburb. He and others like him. Have had a tendency to overshadow those who are truly in need.

But let’s not forget that homelessness isn’t something that just started 2 years ago and both parties have done very little to ease this problem even though our government spends trillions on people who sincerely need it.

So I wish you all the best in your efforts and May Day humility rule for once
