What do you think of heathens? How would you describe a modern-day heathen.

I think heathens are just fine. Modern day heathens are us.

Being English my second language, I only came to know the word as of late and it really does not move anything in me. I don’t use it and I take it as a synonym of pagan.

A heathen is basically the Black sheep that goes against the norm.

Interesting question. I'm not looking up the given definition of heathen, just to give a more honest approach to what I think a heathen is. To me, a heathen is someone that goes against the religious norms of a given society. With this definition, there are lots of heathens out there. People that practice witchcraft come to mind first, but any cult follower, Jews probably, atheist for sure. Anyone that doesn't 'practise' the societal religious norms. I like heathens, because I like it when people go against the norm.

There are several meanings to the term. I generally ignore the Christian pejorative sense, because fork'em, I'm done with that. That said, there are modern Heathens. They are Pagans practicing Asatru, the worship of the Norse deities. Most are Asatruar are not racist; if anything the really knowledgeable ones are seriously anti-racist and consider Nazis punch-worthy blasphemers of their deities. There is a good deal of Stoicism in Asatru, which I personally like, but being both Atheist and Asatru don't really work, as their deities do matter a great deal to them.

It's a slur that the religious use against us. It means you're a godless f***, and that you think you can do whatever you want w/o repercussions. I like to remind the religious that if one misbehaves, there are real punishments on earth. In reality, I think we're generally more moral, so this slur is just an empty word.

I can quite clearly remember the more senior members of the church ministry that my father was one of, preaching during the annual talk-fest that the church held, of sending missionaries out to preach to the heathens of the south seas. These one presumed were the not so white members of the then blissfully ignorant inhabitants of the southern pacific island nations that were at that time being put under white western control in Papua New Guinea etc. So, heathens equalled non-christians. So not very long after that, I decided to become a heathen.

Heathens are people like me.

In a christian concept, anyone who would find a smile in the idea that while the lords of hosts should apparently be adored above all, there are other gods.

In an Australian, leftist context, they can be people who say "I am ok with faggots, but if it licks me, I'll kill it"

Wrong time in Germany's history, saying "jews might be be people too"?

Heathens are people who stand against the tide, sometimes when the tide is going the wrong way.

Heathens are people like you.

a person who does not belong to a widely held religion (especially one who is not a Christian, Jew, or Muslim) as regarded by those who do - google dictionary - so basically an outsider and not necessarily atheist, agnostic, etc..

Therefore, everyone is a Heathen to someone

Heathen is not a descriptive term. Instead, it is a derogatory term invented by whit ethnocentric Christians to disparage people from other cultures. It falls in the same class of hate words like kyke and nigger.

It's so derogatory that it can't be used descriptively for anyone that may fall under the umbrella of anything compared to a heathen of antiquity. Just wondering ...
