From my history classes (from a professor from Belfast & who was an atheist) the term came about as "Christ's mass" (remember until the 16th century the only Christian religion was Catholic). [angelfire.com] Tell that to your Protestant friends.

You as well. Hey, "Christ" and "mass." Son of a gun! Christmas started as a Catholic holiday. Then the Evangelicals got it and claimed it came here on the Mayflower.
