"I hear what you're saying" always seems to have an implied, "but I don't really give a damn."

Ugh. Turning passive aggressiveness into a way of life.

Britain and America are two countries separated by a common language. - G. B. Shaw.

Seeing as I take everything at face value, I might as well wear a dunce cap in British company.

I guess I'm 80% British. Great post, I enjoyed every minute of it.

yet americans have no idea what a special relationship is with another country, they expect only others to believe

Does this mean that all my attempts to amuse the US members on this site with little bits of witty banter, have all failed. Oh well " I'm sure its my fault."

With the greatest respect, I'll bear it in mind. smile009.gif

Well...... Are THEY special?

Well bless their heart!

Brits don’t have a monopoly on sarcasm. I think we use “with all due respect” similarly to their expression. As usual, it all depends on context and tone.

I think I've heard Hugh Grant say all of these phrases in American interviews. Lol.

Thanks; that makes it easy to become an expert on the British.

Impossible. I don't understand them, yet they think I'm one of them!

@Petter It's nice to have company.

Nahhh....they know what we mean and we know what they mean. Also, sometimes for both sides it is convenient to "pretend" that we didn't. It's an old and long two way street and we like it that way.

@Peter ..... Just to make sure, I did not mean my comment as a joke by any means. That's how I see it. Let me expand a little bit, I have been in the UK many times ( bussiness and vacation with my family) and have quite few friends here in the US, the memories built so far have been always great. I am not saying this must be the story for everyone, but it is mine.
