Is anyone else really disturbed by the popularity of the flat earth nonsense? It's representative of many of our societal problems, at the heart of which is an anti-intellectual sentiment. Scary and upsetting to me.

I prefer not to be disturbed or frightened if possible. It’s not worth giving much thought to those attention seekers.

Actually, the earth really is relatively flat in a lot of places, from a local perspective. The flat-earth model works well for local navigation and surveying. Earth as a sphere is needed for long-distance navigation while an oblate spheroid model is used for cadastral surveys over large areas. In all those models the earth can be considered fixed, with celestial bodies rotating around the earth. Of course for astronomical purposes the planetary model comes into play.

No one model is superior. It is important to recognize that all are nothing but models, useful for certain purposes. Actual ultimate reality is far beyond our ken.

Sounds like you are a surveyor. No one else knows the word cadastral.

@fourthaveriots I am a retired one.

@WilliamFleming cool I'm an active one.

@fourthaveriots IMO it’s the best kind of work there is. It was a career that met my fondest dreams. I still think about the jobs we did. I dream about surveying, but they are stressful dreams because it’s hard to make progress when you are asleep. 😟

@fourthaveriots Here’s what you wrote in your bio that rang my bell:

“I try not to allow beliefs to cloud how I experience reality, or at least my perception of it. In fact, I'm somewhat uncertain reality is what we think it is...”

You have nailed it sir!

BTW, I put about 0.1% confidence in the truth of the first paragraph of your bio. 🙂

Knowing very little about it, is it not a mocking, or rebellious response to religion more than science? Like the ‘flying spaghetti monster’ stuff? There seem to be various levels or abilities with regard to avoiding institutionalized religion. Even the ‘new age’ people I know are basically replacing one fantasy with another.

I view them as either attention seeking, or weak attempts to avoid mainstream religion/s. Deep down, nobody sane believes such BS, so it’s obviously a game. My hope is, after they’re tired of playing ...they’ll move up to our level 🙂

I haven't been keeping up with the news lately, so I didn't realize they were still at it. However I have noticed a disturbingly increasing amount of other anti-intellectual items in my YouTube feed, which is odd especially since I don't watch or sub to any of that.

Anti-intellectualism has always been, but the internet gives such people a platform. Unfortunately, lack of education (in the US, at least) contributes to the spread of misinformation.

We have people that value medical “advice” from a mid-grade model instead of doctors; we have people who insist Paul is dead and Elvis is alive.

I tend to subscribe to George Carlin’s philosophy... if you’re viewing life as anything but entertainment, you’re missing the point!

A bit fatalistic, perhaps, but I personally gotta laugh. You’re never going to stop the influx of stupidity.

we have people who insist Paul is dead and Elvis is alive.” Brilliant 😀

Long live Paul!

I like to tell those people how I circumnavigated the globe once in four months. It was pretty amazing. I drove (north) west from Alabama to Vancouver BC, got on a ship, sailed west until I ended up in Florida, and then drove back to Alabama.

@commie1776 so dumb ? I wonder how they account for differences in seasons between the hemispheres.

They have members all over the globe.

When they have their meetings delegates come from the four corners of the earth.

That proves it, not only flat, but square!

Sometimes it just boggles the mind how willfully uninformed people are. There’s been great points made by the others already. This issue comes up every now and then. I posted something I saw on FB that was funny, it just showed how stupid they are.

Sure, I am disturbed. I also suspect there is something other than stupidity behind it.

Yeah, people insisting their personal experience, or even just their personal opinion, is better than the knowledge of someone who's spent half their life studying or working in a specialized field. Of course Trump encourages this.
