@JackPedigo the science line, theoretically. the religion line has a cross, which excludes all other religions. atheism and christianity are not the only two poles. i don't see politics entering into it at all, so i don't know what your comment had to do with the cartoon.

@genessa It has nothing to do with politics or religion. It has to do with mindset. There are more than 2 lines. Lots of non-religious are not followers of science. Science is based on reason and evidence. The only emotion that should be in science is a passion for truth. Unlike some I see deeper meanings in things. The world is not B & W like the cartoon depicted. It is many shades of gray.

honestly, i'm not trying to be argumentative, but if you want to get into semantics, you are using an absolute that NO ONE likes to be lied to. the post is not even saying anyone likes to be lied to. the comment @infinito_rex uses is that people prefer the lies to the scientific truth. one may even say that rex is only referring to the people in the cartoon, not all people everywhere. perhaps there is someone way far in the corner who is just waiting patiently for an opening to get to the other information stand?

I'm not blaming the demagogue or the deluded. I'm just saying that your statement that no one likes to be lied to is a contradiction of the next statement of false escape.

@Lillyfield41 1. we can't say all or none and since i doubt there's been a study, we really don't know how many people LIKE being lied to. 2. if they don't know they're being lied to, then they can't like being lied to. they can only like being told something they like, whether or not it turns out to be a lie, which they may never find out. that's not the same thing as liking being lied to. so absolutes are wrong in both directions.

who's the THEY? the cartoon shows a cross. most people in the world actually are not christian. the poster says "people" -- not MOST people, not some people, not a lot of people, not most christians, not most religious people, just PEOPLE. so... well, i am not fond of generalizations, in general.

@genessa ok. i try to not let what i think i know get in the way of what i could be learning. In my experience everyone carries some factual inaccuracies about the world we live in or the way we live in it. Some larger, some smaller. I'm sure glad i have mine to cling to. peace.

@hankster yes but if we cling to them that means we don't KNOW they're lies. that means that we cannot say people LIKE being lied to. they have to know they're being lied to in order to like or not like it, right? i'll say again what i had forgotten to say above and just said, having remembered: mark twain said (approximately) that it is easier to fool people than to convince them they've been fooled. that indicates, to me anyway, that people don't like being lied to. they dislike it so much they resist believing that they have been lied to.

@genessa but sometimes they love the lie so much they deny its a lie at all. it's not about the factual accuracy of what we're being told, it's how much we wanted to believe it or not. Our preferences can go a long way toward shaping our world view. when people are happy they're not very likely to question things. most people don't seem to be as fixated on truth as much as their own comfort.

@hankster right. but i was responding to the post. that's what i responded to and then folks either agreed or disagreed, sometimes by changing the subject. the post wasn't about loving the lie and my response wasn't about loving the lie. it says clearly "People prefer to be lied to. Even though deep down in their logical mind they know it's all a lie." that's the post. so yeah i know what you said but what you said was not the same as what the post said, right? we're going round and round!
