I am handicapped and I appreciate the aid people extend to me but i am also appalled at the number of people that take handicapped parking places without any reservation. We see the signs stating the fines to be paid but I do not think I have ever heard of one fine being paid.

Here in Mississippi there seems to be no enforcement whatsoever. Not so in CA--I rarely saw anyone disobey the signs. I don't know if it was better law enforcement or just a higher level of conscientiousness .

Here in Australia there is government policy that IF you accrue fines and do not pay them the next time your license or vehicle registration comes up for renewal it's a TOTAL No Go situation, i.e. No License or Car Registration UNTIL ALL fines have been paid.
3 years ago my 'Born Again' Xtian, Evangelist neighbour accrued a sum total of $ 2,300+ in parking fines, about 90% of those being from parking in designated Handicapped Parking spaces, he screamed like a wounded pig when he was pulled over and had his license taken away from him by the police and his car impounded because the Department of Motor Vehicle Registration had automatically cancvelled both the license and the registration.

I have temporary Michigan handicapped placard that hangs on my mirror...I do NOT have a handicapped license plate. It says on the placard not to drive with it in place. I can see how someone who has one (the temporary type that hangs on the rear view mirror), might forget to put it on the mirror and give the impression of a non-handicapped person parked in a handicapped space.

Maybe if they had a couple of their tires slashed they'd get the hint.......

And, if they were in fact handicapped, but forgot to hang the sign? See my post above.

@dahermit Then maybe next time they wouldn't forget to hang their sign..............................Just kidding.........My initial comment was made more in just, not advocating folks actually do that but couldn't say that people who do wouldn't be deserving of that fate...

It disgusts me to see how inconsiderate some people are! I understand that some find it offensive when you offer help. I believe in folkways. If I see someone behind me, I will hold the door open for them. What's an extra few seconds of your life? I almost always get a thank you or a nod. I myself have a broken back and a broken leg. I won't take a space that is designated for someone that needs it.

There was a lady that got so mad about people taking handycapped spaces, that she went out of her way to take pics, and reported them. I don't blame her.

I have a handicapped placard because at times I’m in pain/weak, especially walking any distance. I’m disabled but I don’t use a cane, walker, wheelchair etc. So, unless I feel truly rotten and MUST go somewhere, I try not to use a handicapped space, most especially at the hospital, doctors office parking deck.

I know what you mean. I am also weak -- a 30 yard walk is a trek for me and my cane.
I have one of those blue placards but even I will avoid the handicap spots given the choice. You never know when someone might come along who needs it more than you.
A few years ago my wife and I spent a couple of weeks in Ireland. The people were great but I don't remember any handicap spots at all. I spent a lot of time using my travel wheelchair as a walker. Lol.
Below is me changing a rental car tire In rural Ireland. Shortly after I finished a man stopped, checked my work and told us where we could get a repair In the next town. Lol.

Very grubby thing to do. In UK you have to have a blue badge.
