I am pissed that in 1954 they added "Under God" in the pledge of allegiance! Damn Dwight D. Eisenhower. Then in 1956 he added In God we Trust to money.
Who wishes those to be taken off?

Yes. And while there are more important things to champion for during this particular time in history, it doesn't take away from the importance of upholding the separation of church and state as the founding fathers intended.

The problem in objecting to the inclusion of the word "God" is that some might say that "God" is undefinable. What one person calls "God" another might call "Nature" or "Spirit" or "The Universe" or even "The Source of all Creation, which is Unknowable" and on and on.

I'm curious, but too lazy to research it, how many other countries have a reference to a supernatural deity on their money, motto, anthem, etc., and if so are they progressive countries, or countries where the common people are oppressed.

I am glad that most times the public is asked to sing our American National Anthem (Star Spangled Banner) it rarely goes on so far to the 3rd verse mentioning slaves and the 4th verse with the religious reference.

@ToolGuy As progressive as Canada seems to be in many ways, I do know that I can not legally marry couples in Canada, because I'm a humanistic minister, but Canadian couples can come here to U.S/Hawaii to be married and their marriage certificate is legal in Canada. Apparently clergy members from a church that includes the worship of a deity can, or ancient religions such as buddhism can, but not humanism.

@ToolGuy Right, I mean that a clergy member of my church (Spiritual Humanism) can not legally marry a couple in Canada. Yes, we can unofficially officiate (celebrate or emcee it) but we can not provide the official signature to solemnize the marriage. I get a lot of humanistic couples from Canada to come here though. And when I lived in Seattle, a Canadian couple had me officiate their small wedding (with family only) and then they went across the border to celebrate with a reception in Canada later that day.

I think such things fade into indifference / irrelevance without us having to get apoplectic about it.

Eisenhower's administration more generally pushed the notion that being religious is a necessary component of American patriotism, and in fact what differentiated us from the "godless communists". To be religious was to be a good citizen ... or at least one of the boxes you had to tick.

In theory this was "god as you conceive him to be" but in practice it was nudge-wink white anglo saxon protestantism.

It probably had more to do with McCarthyism than with Eisenhower himself, although I haven't researched it.

As much as I hate it being on our money and how it’s our motto, I believe there’s more important issues to deal with than this. I would rather have an atheist or a nonbeliever in the office who normalizes atheists to the public. I would love to live in a nation where religious teachings doesn’t lead to the suicide of LGBTQ+ people. I would rather live in a country where no children can die from lack of medical attention for religious reasons. I would love to see advancements in Stem Cell research but religion is preventing that.
I’m all one board of getting “Under God” out of the pledge of alliance and “In God We Trust” off of our money. However, I think religion is causing more important issues that need to be stopped as soon as possible.

Very well said and I totally agree.

I don't think those words should be on our money or in the pledge. I also take offense that police cars have "In God We Trust" on their back bumpers. I think it is pretentious and silly.

Being representatives of the government, they should not be promoting any religion. Well said Sir. I would bring the issue up with leadership of the department and see about changing that.

I wonder if like many people who spent their life in the military, he was trying to buy his way in to his fictional Heaven?

Given that he was one of the main reasons for the ending of Nazism and WW2 I can't imagine why he might feel so.
