One of my friend has a friend that wrote his views on religion. He is 30 and dying of cancer, he has weeks left to live.

2/21/18:

Lately I've had the opportunity to reflect on a lot of things, and one of them has been the idea of "good" and "evil" and what motivates the human kindness that works in the better elements of society. Personally I'm an atheist, proudly and confidently. For me, my desire to be a good, decent, and kind person comes from an innate undying drive.
I've never needed anyone or anything to tell me it's good and right to be kind to another human. And that doesn't make me special in the slightest. Humans don't need a religious text or teaching to be altruistic, it's built in to our DNA. I've always found the Christian teaching that we’re born broken, 'sinners' in need of 'saving' to be a disgusting and backwards notion.
I honestly believe in my heart and mind that people are born "good". We're all on the same team on this Earth, but we've got so many things that get in the way of realizing that and I think that historically and presently religion is one of our greatest detriments that prevents us as humans from coming together as one. Throughout my life I've sat patiently and quietly and endured the notion in our society that religion is the only way to personal salvation and "goodness".
I'm in my last weeks of life and I'm here to say sincerely and unapologetically that I don't and never have needed to be saved by anyone or anything but myself and the love that I share with my friends, family, and fellow man.

That is a great saying. Thank you for sharing it here.

That is as real as 'sunshine'...he pulled us along into his goodness so we could celebrate a life, in spite of our grief for his having to leave so soon.

that is beautiful! Thank you!

THANKS for sharing that. It's a powerful statement.

The only thing I can add is that while I've long since shed the intense pessimism about my fellow man that religion demanded I harbor, I do think a handful of people are born so devoid of mirror neurons, so incapable of empathy, that they cannot be deemed "good". However ... it's a true enough statement for general purpose use, and a good antidote to the pernicious concept of "original sin".
