Feel free to reply to any comment by clicking the "Reply" button.I call British English 'English English'. But doubtlessly, there are many sub-dialects. American English comes in four sub-dialects: Northeastern (100 mile radius of NYC), New England, General American, and Southern. And there are numerous sub-sub-dialects ( 11 for Southern English alone). I speak in a patois of General American, and Southern, with lots of "foreign" words and phrases tossed in. Canadian English has at least four sub-dialects that I can identify: Newfy, Maritime, General Canadian, and B.C. (which is practically indistinguishable from General American). Confused yet?

My children all had American accents (My daughter had a dreadful 'valley girl' upward inflection) until we came back to UK. Obs their Dad is American so this made them quite open to an American accent. Now they speak 'American' with a Lancashire accent...its the funniest thing ever. Its fixed too as they are all adults.
