I keep reading these “inspirational” posts that say: “When you wake up, be grateful that you're alive.”

I was non-existent for fourteen billion years, and in only a few years I'm going to be dead, which means that I will again be non-existent for fourteen billion years. And for all eternity. And even a few days after that.
How the hell am I supposed to be inspired by those few days between non-existence and death (more non-existence) — when all around me is a world just looking for a way to kill me?
Vodka anyone?

I find the whole “gratitude” thing especially annoying. Not gratitude to someone for something tangible or specific, but an ubiquitous, generalized gratitude to no one in particular. WTF? I suspect it’s a superfluous survival of theistic thinking. (I live in the US, and also suspect this may be why I’m seldom invited to Thanksgiving celebrations...).

I call folks who do that the Positive Police. They will bully you relentlessly to look on the bright side, count your blessings, it happens for a ‘reason’(spoiler: that reason is, some folks are just joy-sucking asshats)...and yada yada yada.
One of them once said, after I lost my beloved younger brother to cancer: ‘well, at least you know he’s in a ‘better place’. I actually saw red.

That's the worst. And that they feel they "have" to say it. In times like that I wish I could tell them that maybe the best thing they could add to this conversation is silence.
@Benthoven I lost all my fucks with my brother, so now I -do- tell them.
A ‘better place’ for my brother is: HERE. With his wife and five kids...which is what I said. Yeah, I’m an evil crazy beyotch, but it stopped that line of platitudes in its tracks. ?

People would say to me (my brother-in-law was one of the 16 marines killed over Mississippi a couple of years ago)... "God has a plan," or "it's all part of God's plan..." To which I told them that God had no right making plans with my brother's life without consulting him.
@Benthoven I’m so sorry for your loss.
How folks can accept-and cling to-the delusion of a ‘loving’ deity is beyond me.
