I drink soda, club soda, but collectively I call them soft drinks or call them by their name so that people don't get confused. people are just too damn lazy to figure it out.

We called it 'pop' too. But the very word brings to mind a mentally retarded woman I used to help care for, fifteen years ago. She was actually addicted to pop; and we had to keep her pop locked up in a refrigerator, out in the garage. In lieu of her often violent behavior, we weren't supposed to give her any unless she behaved herself. The first few times I worked with her, she would follow me around, yelling "POP!POP!POP!POP!POP!POP!POP!" until my eardrums nearly burst. She thought I was a sucker, and would give in easily. However, with a great deal of patience, and fortitude on my part, I managed to make her understand that whether she got any pop, depended on her behavior. Gradually, we reached an understanding!

We used to say pop in chicagoland back in the 70's. It's rare to hear it now. On occasion, I hear an elderly person say soda pop.

In the UK soda is what the Americans call seltzer water, basically carbonated water with a little bicarbonate in it, usually used as a mixer for whiskey or brandy.
In the north east some people call fizzy drinks pop, but mostly just call soft drinks by their brand names or flavours

Ok, neither. Here in the UK it used to be called 'pop', but that term went out out fashion about 50 years ago. I think most people here refer to it as 'fizzy drink', 'soft drink or by type ie: cola, lemonade, etc.

I grew up calling it pop in Pittsburgh, but now living in central PA, I've adopted the term soda.

For some really interesting maps showing regional language differences (sneakers vs tennis shoes; sub vs hero vs hoagie) check out this article:
