Posts beginning with "As an agnostic, do you...?"

I've noticed more and more posts beginning with "As an agnostic, do you..." or similar, and it's beginning to annoy.

Well, it's called agnostic.com, right, so we're all agnostics, right? Only we're not. Many of us are decidedly atheist, and confidently and articulately say why.

Now, I'm not trying to stir up the agnostic/ atheist debate. I myself, when referring to the majority of non religious collectively here, say non-religious or non-believers, intentionally being inclusive. I wouldn't post something like, "Do you, as atheists, think that..." as if to assume that most are, or that I'm just posting to atheists. And I don't think atheists generally do that here, but it is a pattern of agnostic posting, I've noticed. Perhaps, to me, it reflects an underlining view by agnostics that, at heart, it's an agnostic site. Well, it isn't, as the site stats show.

Sorry for the small gripe, but this has started to bug me lately.

90% or better trolls seeking to widen any chinks in your armor......they could/should hold their breath until then......

Then in your oppinion a post should start, As a member of the "Agnostic" site.....? To be inclusive to all who might see the post?
I think that is what people mean when they say "Agnostic" is member of this site.
I just don't understand your outrage over how someone starts their posts.

If I started a post with:
"Do you, as a 30 year old blonde, female, vegetarian without tattoos, owning a late-model, blue Prius with a scratch on the left rear fender..." would you think I was implying that everyone here is a 30 year old blonde, female, vegetarian without tattoos, owning a late-model, blue Prius with a scratch on the left rear fender?

Clearly not.

i don't mind that so much. i mind more the posts in which atheists mock agnostics and agnostics tell atheists they're arrogant. i am an atheist and i may be arrogant or not (you may never know) but not by virtue of being an atheist, nor do i mock those who are agnostic. i have to admit i am a little bit suspicious of the spiritual, but i try to be polite.

g

Always a good idea to be suspicious of the spiritual. 🙂

@David1955 it means different things to different folks, and to me it means "religion light." please note that while i diss the idea of spirituality that does not mean i diss people who consider themselves spiritual. i think christianity is stupid; that doesn't mean every christian i ever met was stupid.

g

@genessa yes I don't equate being religious with bring stupid, just delusional, and we're all capable of that.

@David1955 indeed. in fact, there are people who self-identify as, let's say, christians, and believe in christianity, whatever version, in a general sense, but cannot be said to be religious. maybe they go to church but they're not rabid or evangelical. they cannot be called delusional people just because they have this one erroneous belief, even if the belief itself can be called delusional. then there's westboro.... pence... bachmann.... ugh!

Well, there are theists on this site. Also, there is a distinction between agnostic and atheist, albeit a fine line to discern the two. I don't really see the problem. If you don't like a post title, then don't click on it - I do that shit ALL the time! 😉

there are theists here but in very small numbers. in addition, a good proportion of them seem to be here for nefarious purposes rather than in solidarity with, or even curiosity about, the rest of us. as for the distinction between atheists and agnostics, i'm not terribly worried.

g

@genessa I don't take much notice of theists here really. In my view they took the wrong turn at Albuquerque anyway.

@David1955 haha that is what brings them to my attention! i have seen, so far, ONE theist who seemed to be honest about checking us out. every single other self-proclaimed theist i have seen here was either a scammer of some sort or a guy who figured atheist girls were sinners and therefore easy.

g

@genessa yes, and I would add the odd New Ager, prattling on about the universe or whatever, more to be pittied than condemned, mostly harmless.

@David1955 don't forget vegans. some people follow a vegan diet and although i think it's unhealthy it's none of my business. others follow and promote and push a vegan diet and if you don't follow one too they either pity you (loudly) or declare that you're just not a good person and should be shunned! that becomes my business.

I hope you feel better now. Just in case you have not noticed but there are a few believers on this site. Blasphemy I say to that, off with their heads.

Well, the site is made up of a number of groups. 17% atheist, 14% agnostic, and then others. That's kind of my point. Posters who post referring to agnostics are usually posting to the community, but as agnostics in a site unfortunately called agnostic they address the post based on their view. What is true is that majority here are non religious. That's why, as I said, I use more inclusive terms when referring to the community of the non religious.

As for believers here, frankly I don't care about them. They are here. Fine. Not my call.

If you are not agnostic then it is not addressed to you

No, I think that most posters are addressing the community but say agnostics. That's my point really.

Maybe it was a religious person asking the question, or maybe it was an atheist asking the question to actual agnostics. Even if it was an agnostic asking the question, maybe they just wanted their fellow agnostic's view.

Do you as humans. Do you as animals. Do you as creatures. Do you as part of the thin coating of slime on planet Earth. Do you as part of the universe. Its inclusive, I'm good with all of it.

I get it. Unfortunately, it's just kind of the nature of the beast.
I've felt the need to answer some posts by starting with announcing that I am an atheist.
The site name is "Agnostic.com". It's not unreasonable to think that most of the membership identify as agnostic.
Sure, it gets annoying, but what are you going to do?

In fact, 17.3% identify as atheist and 14.4% as agnostic. So, by any definition, most of the membership is not agnostic.

@David1955 I was unaware. I honestly don't even think about those things.

I mainly joined this site because I knew, in the least, it would be a community of non-believers. I don't particularly like the term "agnostic" but it doesn't bother me per se, because, ultimately the meaning matters more than the literal word. Are you saying that there are more self-described atheists here?
