Alcoholism culture is so pervasive in my state that it's actually celebrated.

On Monday the state started allowing gas stations and groceries stores to sell hard alcohol and it was in the headlines for about a month and there were celebrations and I'm surprised there wasn't a parade.

I got called a bible thumper for suggesting that people should probably consider alcoholism therapy for just how excited they were.

It's even so prevalent that even myself, who never drinks, gets excited when I buy alcohol and people cheer and tell me I'm a proper adult.

Alcoholism shouldn't be cheered for. And not drinking shouldn't be scorned. And buying a glass of booze once in 30 months shouldn't be a moment of 'adulthood'.

What the fuck is wrong with this ass backwards state

NOTE apparently this wasn't clear enough so let me clarify it isn't about ALL PEOPLE WHO EVER DRINK ANY ALCOHOL EVER just those who drink enough to be considered an alcoholic. Duh.

I'm basicaly a functioning alcoholic, but I would say that there are a lot of people who should not be allowed to drink just because they can't handle themselves, get belidgerant, or stop functioning altogether. I am very picky about who I drink with for this reason.

No one to my knowledge is doing any studies, but my bet is...that it is not just your state that has a lot of people who abuse alcohol nor has a lot of alcoholism. I rarely drink, as I witnessed up close what alcoholism does to the brain and I need mine in my old age! But, I do have a friend who is in recovery (20yrs), and stays in AA, to help others and according to his reporting there are a growing number of alcoholics, at least in the state of Miss.

And that's just recorded diagnosed alcoholics. That says nothing to the daily drinkers that don't acknowledge their addiction

I live in a dry town. I kind of like it.

I don't mind that they roll up the carpet on liquor stores on Sundays around here. So what if people have to plan to drink? Maybe they should. Maybe they should plan to have a ride home too? Or stay at home if they plan to imbibe the amounts I see folks purchase?

They don't sell anything harder than beer at the grocery store.
You have to go to a liquor store for hard alcohol.

It would have been easy - with the pain issues I've had - for me to be a raging alcoholic - but I never went there. Saw two relatives put in the ground way too soon. That did it for me.

It's a drug just like weed is a drug. (And I'm fine with weed - better than I am with alcohol actually because I've never seen weed put anyone into a rage).

I feel for you as a semi-teetotaler in your State.

I wonder if weed will ever be for sale EVERYWHERE? lol Now that I could almost get behind. Except you know - kids?

Alcoholism has done more damage than weed ever has, but I don't actually have any problem with alcohol. I don't drink because I'd just rather have a dr pepper. But honestly I have a long line of raging alcoholics in my family and my grandfather was horrifically abusive with alcohol and my biological father was an alcoholic and my first stepfather beat my mom every time he drank and my dads dad died from alcoholism so it's actually a miracle I don't drink. I drank my teenage and early 20s some but after 21 it lost its luster.

I still have a shot of whiskey and a bottle of baileys that are like a year and a half old in my fridge lol.

But honestly I just see posts all the time about "gotta have my wine every night!" And "fuck no selling on sundays" why can't you just buy it on Saturday? Why do you need to buy two 40 packs a week?

Alcoholism has killed many classmates and friends and destroyed my friend Mjias life forever and THOSE are where my problem lies. And the people that get mad at me for having those problems with those people make no sense. I don't get why being sick of normalizing drinking every day and alcoholism is insulting EVERY PERSON WHO EVER DRANK ALCOHOL EVER.

Makes no sense

@LadyAlyxandrea That's because not drinking to excess is one thing - and alcoholism? Are two very different things.

And if you're pickling your kidneys and liver and you turn into a different person on alcohol? You shouldn't be drinking. (Period!).

Alcoholism is a real thing. People who need a six pack every day - after work? They have an issue. They just have one they're controlling fairly well.

I am not suggesting prohibition - but I see where having it in every store that sells food or drink? Might not be the best thing when you already have issues as a State.

Let's make it MORE readily accessible - That'll help big time! Sure....

@RavenCT just like guns! The solution is always more. Lol

The country is fucked up beyond repair.

I drink moderately but I certainly don't get excited about booze. The entire concept seems very strange.

In my opinion if you're over 24 and that excited about booze, you probably have an alcohol problem. I mean seriously it's just booze and we are past the clubbing partying years. Calm down lol

@LadyAlyxandrea In which state do you reside?

@Storm1752 kansas

Well ,we are in Christian Conservative Trumplican Fucking Kansas. But I agree with you.

My state still has the State Store System (Wine and Spirits Stores) ran and staffed by state workers being paid a living wage, and beer distributors. People pissed and moaned about it ,hollering "why don't we catch up with other states who sell it in stores and gas stations" till now, some service stations and grocery stores sell wine and beer. They don't get it that they are getting rid of good paying jobs, and the grocery stores and gas station employees are having more work added to their load and only getting paid minimum wage or slightly more.

In many states, you can buy alcohol in grocery stores and no one particularly cares.

Orbit Level 7 Apr 5, 2019

Well we could here but just basic beers and wine coolers but now hard liquors.

@LadyAlyxandrea as someone who grew up in a state where you could buy hard liquor in grocery stores (CA) my reaction is kind of "so what?". It makes no real difference where you buy it.

@LadyAlyxandrea , Doesn't the grocery store liquor down there have lowered alcohol content by law?

@LadyAlyxandrea, @Orbit Same here in Chicago. The CVS pharmacy has the best deals on rum, vodka, etc.
