It’s a great shame that such a beautiful building as Notre Dame Cathedral was almost destroyed in a fire this week. With pledges to restore it reaching €800m, I can’t help but wonder what that amount would do to alleviate poverty in France. I wonder how much of that money was pledged by tax-avoiding millionaires, or am I becoming more cynical in my old age?

I’m afraid if the money was not donated to rebuild Notre Dame, it would still not be used by the donors to alleviate poverty....either in France or anywhere else. That is a fanciful notion to say the very least. It would be used to buy up ever increasing chucks of inner-city real estate in London, New York or some other high value city. Either that or a few super yachts, executive jets, Caribbean Islands or any other trinkets that the super rich indulge themselves with. Better to spend it on reconstruction of a historical landmark than any of these alternatives I’d have thought.

I don’t have a popular opinion among my friends but the Catholic Church has more money than their fictional God. Fuck me! They could easily afford to rebuild this mother fucker but fuck no. People are lining up to give them even more money! What the fuck did they do with all the millions that was donated to Mother Teresa’s bullshit scam of a charity? While they all suffered because it brought them closer to god! Jesus fuck! Yes, I know! It’s an ancient work of fucking art that’s been pretty much destroyed and lost to future generations and that sucks ass. I agree 100%. No argument from me about that. But donating money to that organization that harbors and protects pedophiles is something I will never do. Norte Dame is the home of the Diocese in Paris. They are the opposite of needy. Heh, I don’t log in to Facebook much anymore but this opinion has got me blocked by the few delusional friends I had left. I’ll probably even get some pushback here too but I couldn’t care less. Y’all have a great day!

The largest chunks of that money (say, 90%) seem to come from virtue-signaling rich, corporate interests. So that ought to paint the appropriate picture for you.

But, good on them nonetheless. Gothic history that doubles as a part of national identity is still worth restoring and preserving no matter who is paying for it.

There are areas of Paris with widespread poverty, in one of the richest cities on earth. Both of the biggest donors are business people, so I am sure you are correct. I am divided as a history buff. I think its amazing that 600 years ago human beings were able to build something so amazing with little more than hand tools, equally where would humanity be had we focused on improving the life of the population.

No, it seems like our priorities are a bit fucked up.
