Great question. I think that there is a movement amongst the extreme left (or the regressive left) on the political spectrum, who are happy to point out white extremism and call it out for what it is, however, if you look at the recent reactions from the Sri Lanka bombings, and compare it to the attacks in Christchurch, many of the left wing regressives are showing their true colours (I am English, this is how we spell colours). As someone who identifies as being slightly left of center politically, I believe we should just be honest about the situation. Islam, like any other religion, is a religion with a set of ideas that can be interpreted differently. If you belong to that religion, it could inspire you to be a great person, or it could inspire you to carry out acts of violence. When we criticize christians who use their religion to discriminate against homosexuality, transgender people etc, lefties will praise us for doing so, that support isn't there when we argue that ideas within islam could lead to the same thing, and unfortunately, sometimes something worse.

The problem for me is not islam. It is a set of ideas that can be interpreted peacefully. You can be a muslim and be very loving, caring and the nicest person on the planet, and have humanist values, completely consistent with a secular progressive society. This kind of muslim is surely our friend. Unfortunately, a muslim, at the other end of the scale could be a member of ISIS, and even a suicide bomber. The problem really, is that the idea of the religion of islam should be imposed on society. I call these people who have this view 'islamists'. Remember, not all muslims are islamists, and what I believe that we need to do, is to have set of values we hold everybody accountable to (christians, muslims, jews. atheists etc). Whatever we consider to be acceptable behavior, we cannot lower these standards for muslims or any other minority for that matter. This is a form of racism. It is the racism of low expectations.

Every time an extreme lefty refuses to call out islamist extremism for what it is we need to call it out. There are muslims out there doing this, and the rest of us need to show our support to them. It is up to us all to speak out against such inhumane behavior. In summary, this question is about separating bigotry from rational criticism. Bigotry must be stopped, and rational criticism is a must to progress.

It would appear that sharia law is not compatible with democracy and in the Christian world it is only since the enlightenment that a form of democracy has flourished in the West. Sadly this is now being replaced by plutocracy. Islam needs an enlightenment but the religious leaders fear losing their power so I cannot see it happening.

More Muslims have been killed by Isis than non-Muslims.and they have more protests in the streets against Isis.

Thanks for share your opinion.
The problem is that Islamists breed like rats, most of them are trying to turn the infidels into Islam.
in Saudi Arabia, atheism is punished with the death sentence. Islam is a setback for humanity, Islam is as dangerous as the Nazi regime.

yes, it coexists now in most places around the world.

well, yeah. there are muslims living in the united states and not blowing up planes, crashing them into buildings, murdering people or insisting that everyone follow their religion. in fact, most muslims in the united states are just peacefully minding their own business, or running for office to ensure, among other things, separation of church and state.

g

Muslims commit crimes of intolerance every year in the United States.
