So, I made the mistake and posted some Atheist memes on facebook. My Boss fired me though a text, and now my wife and son aren't talking to me. This is one of the posts.

I've been a Facebook hater since its inception. Mainly because of two reasons: the first one you are facing is freedom of opinion, or rather its absence. The second is the most miserable interface, which is impossible to figure out, even sitting for hours. I have a headache after 30 minutes using this app. This is very bad in terms of social media strategy, and it seems to me that by eliminating these two main shortcomings, Facebook can become an even more popular application than it is now. Although I don’t understand the people who use it, since there are much better instagram and Telegram.

You have a huge windfall from a lawsuit in your future, if you can prove that....contact the ACLU immediately! Also Federal agencies, there are lots & lots of laws on the books about this!

I can’t really understand why you posted it in the first place. What did you hope to achieve? I do sympathise with you on the loss of your job however, and I believe if you lived in the UK you would have a case for unfair dismissal. Your employment should not be dependent on whether your employer likes your views of Jesus and whether you believe he’s real or not....unless you are a minister of religion of course. I assume you’re not. I think your family need to grow up, and support you more, but they probably can’t understand why you posted this meme in the first place. A hard lesson to learn I feel, but FB is a viper’s nest, and my advice is no more posting re your personal beliefs there.

I don't agree at all. I post my personal beliefs - mainly political, but also religious on Facebook all the time. Religious stuff is mainly just to family and friends but I try to use my Facebook posts to educate people, and a lot of my political posts are public. I've never had any problems arising from it.

National Labor Relation board would be where I would start asking questions about your job.
Keep a copy of the text message used to fire you.
While still fresh in your memory I suggest you write down a factual timeline of events. Who.what.when.where.why format.

Hmmm.. and where do you live?.. and who did you work for? I agree on getting a lawyer and filing a complaint with a labour relations board if you have that option.

Get a lawyer. They can’t fire you for your religious non-beliefs.

They sure as hell can if you live in an at-will employment state like I do (Iowa). They can fire you for any reason or no reason. That's why I've always said that in at-will employment states, no one who is employed by others has free speech, inside or outside of work, unless they are represented by a union that has a contract. Yup, he lives in Indiana, another red, at-will state.

@Aryn is absolutely right (even though it's Indiana, not Iowa [workplacefairness.org]. The EEOC trumps (no pun intended) at-will when there's discrimination. If the boss had waited a month and said, "We're not satisfied with your work," it would have been circumstantial and a more difficult case to make. This boss was a moron and fired him directly in connection with a protected category. It's solid.

I'm sorry about your family.

As far as your job, you should contact the EEOC and the ACLU. I believe you're protected from discrimination as an atheist as much as if you followed a religion. You have a claim for damages, even though I doubt you want the job back.

Finally, what the fuck is your boss doing monitoring your facebook posts anyway?

@Esot_Eric I understand. Seriously... file a claim as soon as possible. There are time limits. I'm reposting this link [workplacefairness.org] to make it easier to find. There's a link within it to contact the Indiana Civil Rights Commission, they work with the Federal EEOC. Just indicate you want to cross-file and then both agencies work together to determine which one (or both) is the best to handle your case.

It's a lengthy process, so best to get started right away.

Oh crap! That is such a bummer. That one isn't really that bad either. Wrongful termination or unemployment.
