Thomas Paine’s description of how moral mischief can ruin a society was written when less than 3 million people inhabited America. Consider his accurate assessment of humanity when over 300 million occupy these lands. The staggering number of corrupt prostituted sociopaths occupying positions of power within the government, corporations, media, military, churches, and academia has created a morally bankrupt empire of debt.

While this basically describes the Republican Cult to a tee, there are also some affluent dems who also don't follow their own moral compass. Too many people are too concerned with their own personal financial situation, and not concerned enough with paying an appropriate amount for the privilege of living in the greatest nation ever to exist on this planet. You can't keep complaining about the crumbling infrastructure and the schools where teachers pay for their own supplies and still vote against appropriate taxes. Remember 50 or 60 years ago CEOs made 40 times what their employees make, and now they make 10000 times what their employees make, and have so many tax loopholes that they end up paying no taxes. The Republican cult is led by a horrible man who confessed to Billy Bush about grabbing women by their private parts, yet they still voted him into office. I remember during the campaign in 2016 that nobody on the Republican side had anything good to say about the president, yet now they support him as if they don't remember their own comments.

@Freedompath didn't he say that he wanted to drain the swamp? Perhaps he didn't realize that it is 9.834 million square kilometres?

Thinking about it is not encouraging! It is blatantly clear everyday... just how many people saddled with running this Country, has limited capacity and there seems to be no remedy in sight! It almost seems that the ethical and moral people are in the minority! Not, to mention...it does not appear that people can be forced to be more ethical and moral.

On the other hand, I don't believe that we need to be "forced!" The leaders (whomever they are) should exhibit the highest values (of society) and operate at that standard. Then, if "the people" should/would voluntarily follow these examples, then society on the whole may prosper and thrive.

@Freedompath Just thought I'd mention an ideal. Might even mention the "government" that the Founding Fathers tried to set up. However, money, power and politics don't always follow the ideal. So - it's nice to be able to "dream" of the ideal situation - and try to incorporate them in one's own values and lifestyle - knowing that it really isn't going to happen in the collective. I can dream, can't I? And I will. And I will do whatever it is in my power to improve the situation. And at whatever cost! This may sound simplistic, but it works to some degree with me.
@mkeaman for me as well! But, dreaming of the ‘collective’ acting with high ideals has turned into nightmares! To be honest, I thought there was a lot more people that valued their character above all else! Surprise!

It's seems people don't understand this and will blame it on one person. It's a system with lots of people in charge that are corrupted. They have all congregated where they have the best chance to live freely with their corrupted morals and benefit from it while leaving a trail of death and destruction behind them for the rest of the people who don't seek the same power. The problem was here before Trump and will be here after Trump. People thought GWB was the scorn of the Earth and if we got rid of him that the heavens would open and everything would be white picket fences and daisies in the front yard again. Each president seems to be carrying on the legacy of each predecessor in the corporate and foreign policy arena. GWB had Iraq and Afghanistan. Obama expanded it from Iraq and Afghanistan to Somalia, Syria, Libya, Yemen, and Pakistan. Now Trump has continued all of those and also spread it to Venezuela and possibly Iran. It's the system of corrupt sociopaths/psychopaths, not just one person. If people haven't noticed the progressive decay and think it's just one person then they haven't been paying attention. After Trump, there will be another president that carries out the agenda (whether it's Democrat or Republican) or that president will be taken down in a scandal (real or imagined), be gone around like it seems Bolton did to Trump in Syria, or have a bullet in their head.

@callmedubious That is generally true in the last several decades, but it hasn't always been true. Bernie, AOC, and Warren are not sociopaths, but they also are not likely to become prez because they do not cooperate with the other pols who are sociopaths. So they can always be marginalized.
@TomMcGiverin Every year it seems Warren is becoming more corporate and she also is on board with regime change in Venezuela. She proposed not taking corporate money in the primaries, but is open to taking it in the presidential election. I truly believe that AOC is there to placate liberals and progressives. She is letting the establishment Dems write her GND and she deferred to the establishment she claims to want to fight about what to do in Venezuela. None of them are perfect, including Bernie, but it seems some are more willing to go along with the establishment and corporations then they let on.
Currently, the US is becoming a breeding ground for sociopathic fascist ideologues. But we aren't the only country suffering from more sociopaths undermining our cultural freedoms. Check out far right extremists in Italy. [peoplesworld.org]
